Who Should Apply for Financial
Aid?
High School Seniors need to apply for financial aid if:
0 You are planning to attend a four year university
0 You are planning to attend a community college
0 You are planning to attend a trade school
Free Application For Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA)
Website: Fafsa.ed.gov
Application Opens: October 1, 2016
Application Deadline: March 2, 2017
You will fill out the FAFSA if:
0 you are a U.S. Citizen or a Permanent Resident.
0 You must have a social security number to complete
the FAFSA.
California Dream Act
Website: Dream.csac.ca.gov
Application Opens: October 1, 2016
Application Deadline: March 2, 2016
You will complete the California Dream Act if:
0 You are an undocumented student
0 You are not a U.S. Citizen
0 You have attended a CA high school for at least 3 years and
will graduate from a CA high school
0 You do not have a social security number (a social security
number that was issued to you for work purposes does not
count)
What Do I Need To Fill Out My
FAFSA/Dream Act?
0 Your social security number (For FAFSA only)
0 Your Parents’ IRS 1040 or 1040A 2015 taxes
0 The amount of money your parents have in their
checking and savings accounts
0 Date your parents got married or divorced
(MM/YYYY)
0 Your mom’s birthday (MM/DD/YYYY)
0 Your dad’s birthday (MM/DD/YYYY)
0 A list of all of the universities/colleges you applied to
and plan to apply to.
Types of Financial Aid
Available
0 Grants: free money you do not have to pay back Ex.
Pell Grant and CSU Grant
0 Scholarships: Free money you don’t have to pay back.
0 Federal Work Study: A part time job that you will
work on campus. Ex. Bookstore cashier, office
assistant
0 The federal government pays your wages.
0 You can use your earnings on anything you like.
0 Select “Yes” to the question regarding Work Study on the
FAFSA
How Do I Apply For a Cal
Grant?
0 #1 Submit your FAFSA or California Dream Act by
March 2, 2017!
0 #2 JGHS submits your Cal Grant GPA on your behalf.
HOWEVER, if you get an email stating it was NOT
submitted or that you were disqualified, please see
Ms. Zavala ASAP!!
0 #3 Create an account at webgrants4students.org so
you can check the status of your Cal Grant Award.
Board of Governors
(BOG) Fee Waiver
California Community Colleges
0 BOG Fee Waiver: This waiver is awarded to students
who are low income and will be attending a California
Community College. This covers the cost of tuition.
0 For 2016-2017, the BOG Fee Waiver amount was
$1748 ($874 per semester).
Federal Student Loans
0 Federal Subsidized Loans: money that you borrow
from the federal government to help you fund your
education.
0 The government pays your interest while you are in
college.
0 The current interest rate is 3.76%.
0 Federal Unsubsidized Loans: money that you
borrow from the federal government to help you fund
your education.
0 Your interest accrues while you are in college.
0 The current interest rate is 3.76%.
Federal Loans Continued
0 PLUS Loan: money that your parent(s) will borrow
from the federal government to help you pay for your
college education.
0 The current interest rate is 6.31%
0 The interest accrues while you are in college. Parents
are responsible for paying the interest.
Remember…
0 If your school offers you a student loan, you can do
one of three things:
0 Accept the ENTIRE loan amount
0 Accept PART of the loan amount
0 DECLINE the loan
0 If you see a loan on your financial aid award, please
meet with Ms. Zavala to discuss it.
0 ALWAYS ACCEPT grants and scholarships!
Financial Aid Awards
0 If you are accepted to a CSU, UC or Private/out of
state university, you will receive a financial aid award
online.
0 You will need to log in to your account on the school
website’s student portal to review it.
0 Be sure to meet with Ms. Zavala discuss your award and
for help comparing your awards from the colleges.

0 If you are applying to and planning to attend a
California Community College:
0 Your financial aid award will appear on your student
portal on the college’s website.
0 The financial aid awards usually do not show up online
until May/June.
0 You should meet with Ms. Zavala to review your award
and for help understanding it.
IMPORTANT!!
0 ALWAYS CHECK YOUR EMAIL!
0 If a university/college is requesting additional
financial aid documents, see Ms. Zavala ASAP!
0 If you do not submit your documents by a set deadline,
you lose out on a lot of financial aid money!!
