BIOGRAPHY
Dr. T.V. Narayanan, Head of Bird Academy
(Head Bird Academy, Senior Aviation Security Consultant, Bird Group; Global
Aviation Security Instructor & Chief Instructor Dangerous Goods Regulations)
Presently he is working as Head of Bird Academy, one of the top ten Travel and
Tourism Academy in South Asia, Senior Aviation Security Consultant with Bird Group
of companies and Global AVSEC instructor of IATA. He is an approved Chief
Instructor by DGCA and IATA for conducting Dangerous Goods Regulations courses at
Bird Academy.
Dr. T.V. Narayanan was a commissioned Officer in Army Ordnance Corps from Sept.
1970 to April 1987 and served as Senior Armament and Ammunition Technical
Officer (Explosive Expert). He served the Army in various capacities for 17 years
including Cabinet Secretariat Bomb Squad before he joined the Bureau of Civil
Aviation Security (BCAS) on 1st May 1987 as Deputy Commissioner of Security (Civil
Aviation). He was responsible for training, explosive security, technical matters of all
airports in India.
From Dec. 1989 to June 2005, he represented India as “Member of Adhoc Group of
specialists on Detection Plastic Explosive” at International Civil Aviation Organisation
(ICAO), Canada and contributed a number of research papers on detection of
explosives and ability of canine in explosive detection.
He was appointed as “Member, International Explosive Technical Commission
(IETC)”, by Council of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Montreal, and
served as Member for six years. IETC was set up by ICAO on the authority of
International ‘Convention on marking of plastic explosive’ and have 16 Members
selected from 189 countries.
As Deputy Commissioner in charge of Training and Technical division of BCAS he
widely travelled to conduct training programmes/inspections and security audits of
airporst in India. More than 100,000 personnel working at different airports have
been trained by him.
He conducted more than 100 training programmes of Basic Aviation Security (AVSEC)
courses, flight/cabin crew security training programme; AVSEC Management, AVSEC
Audit, AVSEC Screeners, AVSEC Cargo, AVSEC crisis Management programme.
As Deputy Commissioner of Security, technical division, he was responsible for
formulating technical specification/standards/testing protocol of security
equipments deployed at all Indian airports. He retired from the Bureau of Civil
Aviation Security (BCAS) as Deputy Commissioner of Security, Bomb Detection &
Disposal Squad (BDDS) on 30 June 2005.
He did his Doctorate from Nasik University in “Canine response to terrorism and
training of dogs in explosive detection”.
He has trained more than 3600 personnel in Dangerous Goods Regulations training
programme (approved courses by DGCA/IATA).
He is also the author of the book “Modern Technique in Bomb Detection and
Disposal Operation”. This book is widely used by the Army and para military forces.
