VRI Strategy
 Niche: higher level in R&D-programs and in
products and services
 Co-operation
 Continuum: to develop technology for
marketable products starting from ESA
technology programmes
 Strategic choices within ESA
Non-Space Spin-Offs


SPACE PRODUCTS require the implementation of Advanced Technologies
ESA IPR rules
This allows some VRI members to build up technological capacities, which can be easlily
exploited used in non-space domains;


Via Technology Transfer these capacities are used by more conservative third
parties
By doing so, one of our VRI members turned out to be a top-5
contributor to regional economical growth (Vlerick management
school research) (considering own and third party economical
growth)

Objectives of BRUSPACE
 To promote the research programs within the framework of the
ESA as the general program of technology of support (GSTP) as
well as the program on telecommunication systems (ARTES)
 To better integrate Belgium into European spatial politics
 To promote Belgian competitiveness in the space industry
 To promote dialogue between the industrial and the academic
worlds
 To defend the interests of the sector

Future
 Keep at least the same level of “effort” (= investment)
 “Niches” is the key
 Elevate to the level of “system integrator”
 Continue with success stories
Key points
 Space is an interesting investment

return between 2 to 6

high level technological spin off with export possibilities

stimulus for international cooperation opportunities
that reinforces the Belgian and European image
 Maintain the actual investment
Summary
The Belgian Space Industry has :
 a long history with successes
 the capability of being a Small Systems Integrator …and can
thus develop, produce and control… Small Satellites for
commercial and security and defence applications
 a lot of “niche” capabilities
 possibilities to create CEO’s (Centres Of Excellence)
