Circulation Clerk – North Branch

Job Description:
Under the direction of the North Branch Manager, the Circulation Clerk provides
prompt and friendly service to library patrons including: processing circulating
materials, shelving library materials, assisting patrons with questions both in
person and over the phone, and handling money for fines and fees. The work
schedule includes daytime, evening and Saturday hours.
The best candidate for this position displays positive communication and
objectivity toward library customers, a willingness to solve problems and a
commitment to serve the library and the County's best interests. He/She must be
neat in appearance and possess personal integrity. He/She must maintain
confidentiality in all aspects of the position.
Responsibilities:
 Perform general desk duties: circulation of library materials, answering the
telephone, directing calls, responding to patron’s inquiries concerning the
library’s collection, library policies, and library hours of operation,
processing library card applications, placing books on hold for patrons,
managing the public computer access que, maintaining access to
programming sign-up sheets.
 Inspect and clean checked in items.
 Re-Shelve checked in items and straighten shelves as needed.
 Collect fines and other library fees.
 Send faxes, make copies and provide printer assistance to patrons.
 Assist staff with programming preparations.
 Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience and Education Requirements:
 High School Diploma or equivalent.
 Prior customer service experience in library, government, or retail.
 Basic computer knowledge of standard office software, including Microsoft
Office products, email, and internet usage.
 Ability to learn and use the computerized circulation system (Polaris)

Ability to alphabetize and place items in correct shelf order.

Ability to learn and follow the numerically based Dewey Decimal System.
Ability to conduct monetary transactions accurately.
Ability to solve problems and aid patrons.
Ability to maintain reliable attendance and punctuality.
Flexibility with varied work schedule.
Friendly and cheerful even with demanding patrons.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be
met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Individuals may need to sit or stand for extended periods. Manual dexterity to
manipulate library materials is required. The ability to communicate orally and in
writing effectively is necessary. Job duties include reaching above shoulder
heights, below the waist or lifting as required to file documents or store materials
throughout the work day. The ability to do repetitive tasks with speed and
accuracy is needed. Employees may need to carry, push, pull, or lift up to 30
pounds while using proper lifting techniques. Pushing and pulling fully loaded
(50-100 pounds) book carts will be commonplace. The ability to work under
pressure, coordinating multiple responsibilities simultaneously, and meet firm
deadlines will be expected.
