FORESTRY / SPECIES DISTRIBUTION GEOSPATIAL DATA ANALYTICS FOR TREE SPECIES DISTRIBUTION MAPPING FORESTRY DECISION SUPPORT This specialist forestry data product, used for mapping the distribution of tree species, is derived by analysing optical and radar satellite data to model the spatial distribution and proportions of discrete tree species within a target area. Users can easily identify the mix of species present within an area and the spatial variations that exist. + See a spatial map of individual species distributions + Understand the distribution in species mix and density + Analyse and interpret associated commercial quality FORESTRY / SPECIES DISTRIBUTION DATA INPUTS Multi-temporal, medium-resolution optical and radar satellite image data: + 10m Optical, 10-day revisit frequency + 20m Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), 12-day revisit frequency DATA PROCESSING Optical and SAR imagery are utilised in a machine learning algorithm using a classification training database of species. The use of multi-temporal, multispectral imagery and cloudpenetrating SAR backscatter allows for the spectral distinction between species. A model has been created for relating spectral input variables to species class, which is applied to all available imagery for a site to assign each pixel a proportion and dominant species class. OUTPUTS The output from this method is a spatial map of individual species distributions and their relative proportions at a per-pixel level (10m), that can be aggregated into compartment / stand totals, while offering the variation within stand / compartment to be analysed and interpreted to understand the spatial distribution in species mix, density, and associated commercial quality.
