Fishers of Men
And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew
his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow
me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed
him. 21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee,
and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called
them. 22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him. (Matt 4:18-22)

Key Points




The Church is in the people business
God became _FLESH_ so flesh could touch God. Light came into darkness in
order for _DARKNESS__to see light. _HEAVEN__ came to earth so that earth
could go to heaven.
o It was God who _INITIATED_ the first move. The church must do the same by
initiating the first move toward the lost.
Jesus never told the _SINNER__ to go to church, he told the church – to go to the sinner
o Jesus went to where sinners were and took the truth to them. - If we can’t get the
sinner to church then we must get the church to the sinner.

JESUS is Lord of the Harvest (Matt 9:37)
PERSEVERANCE – Don’t give up casting your nets
o But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth
the faith which once he destroyed. (Gal 1:23)

o But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted,
strengthen thy brethren. (Luke 22:32)
o You may need to “walk the walk” and “talk the talk” for years to win that neighbor
or family member to Jesus Christ.

DRAWING in the harvest is a CORPORATE_ Effort (Body Ministry) (v6-7)

Remain FLEXIBLE & WILLING as the Lord directs
o Sometimes the catch is on the “OTHER SIDE”, requiring a CHANGE in STRATEGY.
o You may be the “partners” of those who cast the net. / Be willing to “come and
help” with the harvest.
o The Great Commission is a continuum. And you are part of it, somewhere on that
continuum.
o Two sides of the work of fishermen – CASTING the net and MENDING the net.
This pictures the dual purpose of the church – evangelism and discipleship.
o Expect large harvests (John 21:6)
The Church must DIE Daily

Just as Jesus died we must die to selfish desires.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and DIE, it
abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much FRUIT. (John 12:24)
If the church has selfish desires that will hinder the growth that God wants us to
experience. We must die or we will abide alone.

Corn that is dry and parched at the end of the season may appear dead; however there is
more life in that dry corn stalk at this time than at any other time during the season. This is
where the seeds for the next crop come from.
 When Jesus died he produced life. – CALVARY produced PENTECOST.
o John 14:17 “…but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

