by Willie Lee (2006-03-30) This second special issue of Pure and Applied Geophysics (already published in Volume 163, Numbers 2-3, March 2006) in honor of Keiiti Aki focuses on recent advances in quantifying and interpreting heterogeneities in lithosperic structures and earthquake behavior. The volume provides a combination of reviews, methodological studies and applications on topics related to Aki's pioneering contributions. It also includes material on Keiiti Aki and a list of his publications. The discussed subjects include research associated with dynamic earthquake rupture, studies on imaging earthquake locations and structures using P and S seismic phases, and studies associated with imaging source and structure properties using scattered coda waves. The volume will be useful to students and researchers alike, who are interested in the nature of large- and small-scale heterogeneities in the earth's lithosphere and earthquake properties. This Volume is edited by Yehuda Ben-Zion and William H.K. Lee and will also be published as a Pageoph Topical Volume in paperback (List Price: $79.95, Birkhauser, publisher). It contains the following 16 chapters: Introduction (Yehuda Ben-Zion and William H. K. Lee) Modelling Rupture Dynamics of a Planar Fault in 3-D Half Space by Boundary Integral Equation Method: An Overview (Xiaofei Chen and Haiming Zhang) Geological Observations of Damage Asymmetry in the Structure of the San Jacinto, San Andreas and Punchbowl Faults in Southern California: A Possible Indicator for Preferred Rupture Propagation Direction (Ory Dor, Thomas K. Rockwell, and Yehuda Ben-Zion). The Applicability of Modern Methods of Earthquake Location (Paul G. Richards, Felix Waldhauser, David Schaff, and Won-Young Kim) Development and Applications of Double-difference Seismic Tomography (Haijiang Zhang and Clifford Thurber) Estimating Crustal Heterogeneity from Double-difference Tomography (Jean -Luc Got, Vadim Monteiller, Jean Virieux, and Paul Okubo) A New Passive Tomography of the Aigion Area (Gulf of Corinth, Greece) from the 2002 Data Set (S. Tselentis) The Theory of Coda Wave Interferometry (Roel Snieder) Phase and Correlation in `Random' Seismic Fields and the Reconstruction of the Green Function (Michel Campillo) Modeling Full Seismogram Envelopes Using Radiative Transfer Theory with Born Scattering Coefficients (U. Wegler, M. Korn, and J. Przybilla) Scattered Surface Wave Energy in the Seismic Coda (Yuehua Zeng) Constituents of Vertical-component Coda Waves at Long Periods (Takuto Maeda, Haruo Sato, and Masakazu Ohtake) Temporal Changes of Shallow Seismic Velocity Around the Karadere-Düzce Branch of the North Anatolian Fault and Strong Ground Motion (Zhigang Peng and Yehuda Ben-Zion) Crustal Heterogeneity in the Source Region of the 2004 Mid Niigata Prefecture Earthquake: Inversion Analysis of Coda Envelopes (K.
