Potable Water Supplies
Disinfectant and pH Tests
The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC, 2006)
entered into force in August 2013 and presented
the Maritime Industry with a legal requirement to
supply quality, nutritious, consistent drinking water
to crew members. Interpreting this obligation can
be daunting, especially when presented with a
range of international and flag state protocols.
The WHO Guide to Ship Sanitation (3rd edition) is a
good reference, but even this has been updated in
the last few years to accommodate the control of
more recently identified bacteria such as legionella.
It is important to disinfect potable water prior to
consumption, even if water has been produced
from on-board evaporators. Adding trace levels of
chlorine is a standard treatment but others, such as
UV or chlorine dioxide are also possible.
Technical Data
The Lovibond® Marine Potable Water Test Kit has
been developed to address all these protocols. It
combines simple procedures to incorporate in to
a vessel’s “Water Safety Plan” to help ensure the
maintenance of high quality water throughout the
potable network.
Microbiological Tests
It is important to screen potable water for harmful
bacteria that may have inadvertently entered the
water system, either through leaks, human error
or even human/animal faecal contamination.
Corroded or infrequently used sectinos of pipework
can also harbour harmful bacteria.
The Marine Potable Water Test Kit is supplied with
simple, yet sensitive, tests that give a colour change
in the presence of coliforms, E.coli, enterococci and
pseudomonas - all harmful indicator bacteria which
might be present through a breach in security of
supply.
Microbiological Tests
Coliform/E.Coli
Method
Presence / Absence
Sample Size

Coliform
Colourless to Yellow (35°C)
E.coli Test
Fluorescence in UV (35°C)
Pseudomonas
Fluorescence in UV (38°C)
Enterococci
Yellow to Blue / Green (35°C)
Total Bacteria Plate Test
Chlorine is nearly always the preferred treatment at
“shock doses” to facilitate the cyclical sterilisation
of tanks, pipework and showerheads. The
Lovibond® CHECKIT Comparator is included in the
Potable Water Test Kit to enable chlorine and pH
monitoring at all parts of the water system.
Results are obtained in a few minutes. Add a
reagent tablet to a 10ml sample of water. Cap the
tube and shake to dissolve the tablet. Chlorine will
turn the sample pink. Place the sample into the
comparator and rotate to the colour disc to match
and confirm the result.
