We are in the the great place of the Regent Jongintaba – a father to so
many Tembu Leaders, is exceptional testimony to a true coach, and to the
truism that leadership is about producing leaders, than perpetuating self.
Today and many years to come, the resilience and widespread impact of
Tembu people in many spheres of public life can be closely associated with
the quiet, determined, steadfast, deliverated leadership interventions of the
Regent Jongintaba.
The most famous of the sons of this komkhulu, came to be Nelson Mandela,
he became the most significant and well known of the champions of the
values that are to be found in this place, and evidence of the teaching of
King Jongintaba.
Mqhekezweni – Nelson Mandela called it a metropolis of its time, the centre
of the great events of Tembuland, the capital of AbaThembu Kingdom at the
time.

It was the epicentre of power, all lobbyists for all kinds of things descended
on Mqhekezweni, high court of Tembuland, Future leaders were brought here
as were sent to Qhumanco for socialisation into leadership.
If the impact of great leaders transcends their time, their generation and their
geographic domain, then Jongitaba was a repository of great leadership.
Influence on young leaders – and made the greatest impression on Nelson
Mandela – who lifted many of the values evident in Mqekezweni into his later
leadership work and life – globally.
It is directly associated with the values of ubuntu, with the living tradition of
abaThembu as they relate to humanity as a whole, it came to epitomise the
idea that a person is a person through people.
Chief Jongintaba continued and reminded his people of the noble history as
created by King Ngubengcuka, who was a superstatemen. His leadership of
his people will go a long way as a contributor to the rebirth and cultural
renewal. He has always had a political and cultural cause. The place and
position of the Thembu people and the Royal family must be elevated. Chief
Jongintaba is a custodian and champion of the cultural and developmental
interests of the Thembu nation.
Exceptional testimony to the Tembu Royal system, to Ubuntu as a world view
and a life practice, as seen in the many young leaders who were brought
here for socialisation for no material benefit to the regent, or his household,
Traditional Authority Systems were castrated into a caricature of their former
selves by the Bantu Authorities Act and numerous other acts that finished off
African independence and self rule – the Mqekezweni Great place is a stark
powerful remainder of an era that was nearly obliterated by colonialism

Exceptional testimony to the Tembu Civilisation at a time when the last
veneer of self determination and independence was being eroded and
colonial might was making final push for final victory
Testimony to how the “modern period”evolved out of the clash and dialogue
of civilisations.
Frontier Space – Social Frontier – Cultural Frontier
The protection, management, authenticity and integrity of properties are also
important considerations. Since 1992 significant interactions between people
and the natural environment have been recognized as cultural landscapes.
As we hail the leadership of Regent Jongintaba, let us always remember that
the dawn of freedom promised the cultural renewal and respect for all
kingdoms. Regent Jongintaba must occupy his rightful place as an African
legend. We admire his courage and convictions. His bravery re-awakens the
ancestors of the people.

Regent Jongintaba continued and reminded his people of the noble history
