Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Mathematical Modeling (IMM) LOCATION: Moscow Address: 4a Miusskaya pl., Moscow, 125047 Telephone: (7-095) 250-7986 Fax: (7-095) 972-0723 HOMEPAGE: http://www.imamod.ru/ {Entered 8/14/01 ES} SUBORDINATION: Russian Academy of Sciences ADMINISTRATION: Director: Boris Nikolayevich Chetverushkin Deputy Director: Vladimir Fyodorovich Tishkin [Institute of Mathematical Modeling Web Site, http://www.imamod.ru/.] {Entered 8/14/2001 ES} ACTIVITIES: The history of the Institute of Mathematical Modeling begins in 1948 when a team of Soviet mathematicians and physicists was formed to explore the possibility of calculating the yield of nuclear explosion. The major activity of the Institute since then was modeling of nuclear explosions and calculating their yields. In 1953, when the first Soviet computer, the Strela, was put into operation, the Institute, along with a number of other research labs, was placed under the supervision of the Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. The Institute worked closely with specialists from Sarov (Arzamas-16) and Snezhinsk (Chelyabinsk-70) on computer modeling for the needs of the nuclear weapons complex.[1,2] Other activities of the Institute of Mathematical Modeling have included computer experiments on laser thermonuclear fusion, super-strong magnetic fields, super-power gas-discharge lasers, aerodynamics, microelectronics, dense plasma physics,[2] and designing fast-breeder reactors.[1] The Institute became a separate entity in 1990. The main focus of IMM's research is on fundamental modeling and new information technologies. As of 2001, it has approximately 100 employees.[2] Sources: [1] "Russia Academy of Sciences Institute of Mathematical Modeling," Vooruzheniye, politika, konversiya, No. 4(11), 1995, pp. 39-42; in FBIS-UMA-96-153-S.] {Entered 10/15/96 KVY} [2] Institute of Mathematical Modeling Web Site: http://www.imamod.ru/. {Revised 8/14/2001 ES}
