SoWa Research Infrastructure
is looking for:
Head of Laboratory - Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry
Full-time position
The Biology Centre CAS is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist to lead research in stable
isotope biogeochemistry within the framework of the Soil Water Interaction Research Infrastructure
(SoWa RI).
Salary: from 30k to 50k CZK/month (gross) depending on academic degree and professional
experience
Closing date: open until filled
About the employer
SoWa is a newly established part of the Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences, whose
research predominantly addresses ecological topics with a significant emphasis on biomedicine. The
research involves collaboration across disciplines, the use of diverse methodological approaches
(molecular biology, genetics, taxonomy, field ecology, mathematical modelling, etc.), and a
combination of analytical and holistic approaches to problem solving. Core facilities with shared
equipment support all of the Centre’s scientific institutes. SoWa will primarily support research
aimed at understanding the key physico-chemical and biological processes responsible for providing
ecosystem services, nutrient cycling (particularly nitrogen and phosphorus) with emphasis on organic
matter decomposition, water runoff, water purification etc. The main focus will be on ecosystems
under heavy anthropogenic pressure.
About the position
The National Research Infrastructure SoWa (Soil and Water) for the comprehensive monitoring of
soil and water ecosystems in the context of sustainable landscape use has an opening for a leading
research position in stable isotope biogeochemistry. Successful candidate is expected to conduct
research in stable isotope biogeochemistry, in the field of soil and water interactions, and to offer
external expertise in her/his field to collaborating groups/institutes.
This is a challenging position, well suited for a biogeochemist with a PhD in stable isotope
biogeochemistry or related specialization, with broad research interests. It is an exciting opportunity
to participate in establishing the Stable Isotope Laboratory, equipped with IRMS with EA, pyr-GC/MS
and HPLC interfaces, and developing her/his own research projects. The candidate will work in an
interdisciplinary team of chemists, limnologists, microbiologists, and soil scientists.
The candidate should have an experience with data evaluation and publication, and a track
record of generating independent funding. Effective management of time and resources, and good
interpersonal/leadership skills are essential attributes of the successful candidate for this position, in
addition to technical expertise. Candidate experienced in the use, maintenance, and development of
isotope mass spectrometers/analytical equipment will be favored. Good oral and written
communication skills are required as is the ability to supervise/mentor students and visiting
scientists. On the longer term, the candidate is expected to lead a team working in her/his field of
expertise.
Further particulars
Start date (as early as March 2017) is negotiable. The position is available until the end of 2019 and
may be further extended based on the applicant’s performance and funding opportunities. The salary
is highly competitive in local standards. Ceske Budejovice is a medium-sized town ca. 150 km south
of Prague with 100,000 inhabitants, a relaxed atmosphere, and a growing community of foreign
scientists at the University and the Biology Centre. Three faculties and five research institutes dealing
with aquatic and terrestrial biota are located on the same campus, allowing easy access to other
researchers and resources. Both the town and the surrounding countryside provide numerous
opportunities for research and leisure activities. Living costs are low by international standards.
Courses of Czech language are provided for foreign staff to reach a basic level of proficiency in
everyday situations.
