 Continue to read page 54-55 with partner and define vocab

 As students read, answer the questions:

o What was the difference between northern and southern
Mesopotamia?
o How did Mesopotamians use technology for water?
o Why did farmers in Mesopotamia create a system of levees
and canals?

Day 2:
 Warm up: Read and look at the diagram on page 56 and answer
the two questions.
o Mesopotamia rivers and water control video
 Students will then read pages 56-57 and record vocab:
o Erosion
o What were some of the new crops grown in Mesopotamia?
o Why did much of the soil become dry?
o How did Mesopotamians alter their region?
o Why did farmers plant trees on the banks of the river
(diagram on page 56)?
 Answer questions on page 57
o Collect for a class work grade.

Day 3:
 Warm up:
 Watch video on Mesopotamia: Sumer civilization
 Show pictures of the City of Sumer:
 Students will read pages 58-59 and record vocabulary
o Cuneiform
o Scribe
o Sumer
 Students will then make a T chart.
o Record inventions of Sumerian inventions
o 2nd column, explain how they improved life/used today
 Save for future sections.
 Homework: page 59 and answer question 1-2.
Day 4:
 Warm up: Answer questions from map on page 60
 Read pages 60-61. Define vocab:
o City states
o Ziggurat
o Temple
o Polytheism
o Enheduanna
o Sargon
o Empire
o Ishtar
 Questions:
o What were the walls around each city used for?
o In which place did the king rule?
o How did the Sumerians please their Gods?
o How was the cuneiform writing helpful within the kingdom.

Day 5:
 Warm up: Was the City of Sumer considered a civilization?
Explain

 Finish the section on the City of Sumer by reading pages 62-63
