Notes 4-1 Conserving Land and Soil
Uses of land that change it:



Agriculture
Mining
Development
Without soil, most life on land could not exist. Poor soil management results in 3 problems:
1.
2.
3.
Erosion
Nutrient depletion
Desertification
Land Reclamation: the process of restoring an area of land to a more productive state.
Notes 4-2 Waste Disposal and Recycling
Solid waste is:
1. Incinerated( burned)
2. Buried in landfills – rainfall causes LEACHATE from landfills
3. Recycled – the process of reclaiming raw materials and reusing them for new products. Recycling categories
include metal, glass, paper and plastic
4. Biodegradable wastes – can be broken down by bacteria and other decomposers
Types of hazardous wastes
1.
2.
3.
4.
Explosive
Flammable
Corrosive
Radioactive
All hazardous wastes come with potential health risks
Hazardous wastes are stored depending on the type and potential danger.
Notes 4-3 Air Pollution and Solutions
Causes:
1.
2.
3.
Outdoor – emissions, photochemical smog, reduction in the ozone, temperature inversions, acid rain
Indoor – Dust, pet hair, carbon monoxide, radon
CFC’s (chlorofluorocarbons) cause the depletion of the ozone layer
Risks:
1.
2.
3.
Damage to lungs/heart
Breathing problems, eye and throat irritation
Deforestation
Reducing:
1.
2.
3.
Controlling emissions from factories
Controlling emissions from cars
Reducing energy use
