SAFE OPERATING PROCEDURES
PORTABLE ELECTRIC
SANDERS
(SOP 13)
Do not use any electric power tool unless authorized and accredited in its safe use
Eye protection required.
Respiratory protection required.
Appropriate safety footwear must be
worn.
FORBIDDEN
Setting the tool down while still running.
PRE-OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS
Ensure the working area is clear and free of hazards. The work itself may need to be fixed in
such a way that it cannot move. A sanding board is recommended for sanding small
components. (See plans over).
Check the tool is serviceable - the flexible cord and plug, tool housing and abrasive paper
mount should show no obvious damage.
Check brush and terminal covers for integrity and security.
Make sure the on/off switch works normally.
If an extension lead is needed, make sure it is serviceable and unrolled fully.
If dust extraction is available for the machine, make sure it is fitted correctly and working.
Select and fit the correct grade of sanding paper to suit the job.
OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS
Avoid working in obviously unsafe environments, eg. Damp ground or standing in water – wet
sanding is especially risky. If you have to work in a wet environment, use a compressed air
powered (pneumatic) sander.
Grip the tool firmly before operating the start trigger. Check the flexible cord is safely out of the
way of the sanding path.
When sanding, use firm, forward pressure without overloading the tool. Take care to sand evenly
ie. from one end of the job to the other, in a smooth continuous motion.
If anything untoward happens, switch off and pull the plug. Allow the tool to stop completely
before putting it down.
HOUSEKEEPING
Return the tool, unused sandpaper and any extension lead used to safe storage. Leave all equipment
in a safe, clean and tidy state.
POTENTIAL AND RESIDUAL HAZARDS
■ Skin abrasion
■ Eye injury ■ Dust ingestion
This SOP is intended to act as a reminder to assist safe working of qualified personnel. It does not necessarily cover
all hazards that may arise during use of this equipment.
