3rd Annual Taking it to the Streets
We hosted our third annual “Taking It to the Streets” community service event
on Saturday, December 1st , 2012. This event was conceived from the 2010
National Day of Empowerment (NDOE) which focused on hunger. From the
2010 NDOE, YPN-ULEM decided to take this mission one step further and
established our “Taking It to the Streets” annual event. The goal of the event
is to provide homeless people in the Greater Boston area with basic need items,
resource materials about our affiliate, and general hygienic products.
Over the past couple of years we have served 100 of meals to homeless
individuals during this event. This year after receiving feedback from past
recipients, YPN-ULEM provided blankets. Through the generous donations of
the TJX Companies Inc.. and YPN-ULEM members, we collected over 150
blankets. In addition , in recognition of World AIDS, YPN-ULEM provided
individuals with literature related to HIV/ AIDS. Each recipient received a bag
which included a blanket, HIV awareness ribbon, condoms, homelessness
literature & resources, HIV/AIDS literature & resources. 20 volunteers
participated in this event.

Take the Test Boston 2013
Expanding the vision of our chapter’s Public Health committee
and leadership of Jennease Hyatt, YPN-ULEM, gave birth to
Take the Test Boston in 2012. In collaboration with the
Multicultural AIDS Coalition, Action for Boston Community
Development Health Services, Big City 101.3 FM – as leading
organizations – and 50+ other organizations, we implemented
an HIV-testing, urban community initiative. Take The Test
Boston is a community mobilization state of emergency effort
in response to the National HIV/AIDS Strategy and the Center
for Disease Call for high impact prevention. Take the Test
Boston, affectionately referred to as T3B, is a week-long, urban
community, HIV-testing initiative led by a diverse group of
community leaders (health and service providers, social and
civic organizations, business, media, residents, activist,
legislators) concerned with the impact of HIV/AIDS and health
inequity in our communities.
T3B aims to (1) get communities of color informed of the
importance of knowing their HIV status, (2) bring HIV testing
resources into the community, and (3) engage non-traditional
organizations in supporting community testing. We hope to
reduce stigma about HIV/AIDS in the community through
increased education
This year in conjunction with the Urban League, YPN-ULEM
participated as a lead organization to recruit volunteers, canvas
neighborhoods and use the Urban League of Eastern
Massachusetts as a testing site. 100’s of individuals were tested
& thousands of resources were distributed. . Over 300 hundred
individuals were tested and received free resources.

STEM Green Works!
Careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
are the wave of the future, but are students of today equipped to and
interested in pursuing these fields? For this year’s National Day of
Service Project, YPN-ULEM conducted a hands-on STEM
enrichment day that was designed to stimulate and help to maintain
interest in STEM fields, while educating participants about various
opportunities in the fields. This program was designed to serve
students in grades 6-10 and took place at a local community center,
on Talbot Ave in Boston. This event was free and open to the public.
Parents and students were welcome to participate together.
Volunteers began the day by introducing students to the four R’s of
STEM Green Works - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover.
Students were then given the scenario of being stranded on a deserted
island and finding ways to survive. Experiments were designed to
introduce participants to eco-friendly activities that promote low
energy use and sustainability. Volunteers assisted students in
conducting various experiments & activities .
Experiment #1 Sun Tea
Experiment #2 Water Filtration
Experiment #3 Eco-Friendly Home
Experiment #4 Planting Activity
Students hypothesized and recorded their experiment
findings in their Green Stem Works journals.
Throughout the day 6 professionals shared their own
experiences in STEM fields, while describing their
career paths. Professionals from STEM fields ranged
from a biomedical engineer to a chemist.
Participants were provided with breakfast, lunch, tshirts, and gift bags with STEM resources. 20
volunteers assisted in bringing STEM to students. The
day closed with students receiving certificates of
completion

who were able to give an on-the-ground assessment of the state of the race and its impact
on our community.
•
Securing a grant award from a locally-based funder to help support voter education and
registration efforts in the community.
•
Conducting a voter outreach phone bank to remind people to register to vote, answer
questions related to the voting process and access to polls, and to encourage them to
express themselves at the ballot box. This effort resulted in over 300 unique voter contacts.
•
Hosted Voter Registration Cookout.
•
Hosted two debate watch parties open to membership & public.
•
Engaged community youth in Voting through Rock the Vote
event.
Occupy the Vote
During the 2012 -13 program year YPNULEM members continued the chapter’s
long history of staying active and
involved in the civic affairs of our
community. Between elections at the
federal, state, and local levels, YPNULEM ensured that our members were
informed of the choices before them and
what the impact of those choices could be
on successfully implementing the
National Urban League Empowerment
Agenda.
In addition, YPN-ULEM members were and
continue to be involved in numerous electoral
campaigns and ballot initiatives in the region – in
both professional and volunteer capacities. It is safe
to say that YPN-ULEM has increased our voice as
one of the leading organizations in our community,
and of our generation, in the work to protect and
promote civic engagement.

Membership Orientation
Join Week
YPN-ULEM believes it is important to know about the history of the
organization. In order to ensure every member has an opportunity to
learn about Young Professionals Network and the Urban League, every
other month a new member orientation was held at the Urban League
of Eastern Massachusetts’s headquarters. This is an opportunity for
new and existing members to learn about the history of the
organization on a national and local level. In addition, members are
informed about the various committees and opportunities to play an
active role within the organization.
During the months of November 2012 and January 2013 YPN-ULEM
began a strong push to gain new members and to re-engage former
members of the organization. In order to entice potential YPs, we offered a
yearlong membership at a discounted rate of 20% off the membership
during Join Week and raffled off free membership at various events put on
by our chapter. In addition, membership chairs and volunteers also
increased efforts to connect with membership during this time to remind
them of the positive work YPN-ULEM has been doing within the
community, share information about up-coming programming and
accessed their needs as members. Our efforts garnered 17 memberships.
General Body Meetings
YPN-ULEM General Body Meeting are held the 2nd Thursday of

Fund Development
2012-2013 Sponsors
Since inception in 2011, YPN-ULEM’s Fund Development Committee
continued goal is to establish and cultivate strategic alliances, corporate
sponsorships and partnerships to further the mission of YPN-ULEM and
our affiliate. The committee focused on their two major signature
fundraising events: Evening of Elegance & Jazz (June) and the 2nd
Annual Leadership Development Conference (November). In addition to
fundraising for the events, our chapter has also focused on fundraising
for general supplies and refreshments for chapter meetings.
By seeking out new partnership with non-traditional companies and
working with existing partnership such as Bimbo Bakeries USA, Biscoff,
Neighborhood Health Plan and Microsoft NERD Center, YPN-ULEM
continues to leverage their relationships resulting in both direct-dollar
and in-kind donations. Because of the far reach of our affiliate, President
and CEO Darnell Williams has been able to secure relationships with
numerous, financially-solvent companies and organizations in our city,
we have been able to approach companies such as State Street, Eastern
Bank, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and The Boston Foundation in
partnership with our affiliate to maximize the direct-dollar amount
donated as a whole.
Through aggressive and innovative approach of saving our affiliate money, we have
been able to provide our affiliate $5000 in direct-dollar donations, save the affiliate $
18, 081 in affiliate service hours (at a rate of $21.79/hour at 861 service hours,
referenced by www.independentsector.org) and contributed $18,000.00 in marketing
and public relations efforts and outreach during this program year.
YPN-ULEM has generated over $40,000.00 via direct fundraising through
sponsorship, in-kind donations and membership dues.

YPN-ULEM’s 2012 -2013 Communication goal consisted of 1)
increase YPN-ULEM-ULEM’s social media presence; 2)
successful launch of the chapter website; and 3) a unification of
YPN-ULEM-ULEM’s branding throughout chapter activities and
events.
Successful launch of the chapter website
The missing element of the chapter marketing
efforts was a website which was launched in
the fall. With the ability to allow new and
prospective members to join and learn about
our chapter it has given YPN-ULEM an
opportunity to showcase our activities, events
community partners and sponsors.
Radio , TV & Print
YPN-ULEM continues our media presence
on the radio & on television . President
Luma & Vice President Villarson made
radio appearances on Big City 101.3.
On November 2, 2012 President Luma was
featured on BBC’s World Have Your Say:
Increase YPN-ULEM-ULEM’s social media presence
YPN-ULEM successfully conducted its first ever online Facebook
discussion and contest in the beginning of its program year. The goal
of this discussion & contest was to increase the visibility and public
knowledge of our new Facebook page. Engaging our Facebook
audience with questions surrounding the current political topics,
participants were entered into a raffle drawing to win a pair of tickets
