The Honorable Mr. Grasso
Councilmember, District 2
Anne Arundel County Council
Annapolis, Maryland 21401
November 28, 2011
Dear Councilman Grasso,
I am writing to ask you to support Bill 79-11 that establishes the Stormwater Management and
Restoration Fund.
The poor water quality of Anne Arundel County’s streams, creeks, and rivers affects all of us. As
you know, stormwater runoff brings large amounts of sediments, nutrient and fecal bacteria into our
creeks and streams. High sediment loads darken our water, preventing aquatic grasses from growing.
High nutrient loads bring algae blooms that later die and cause dead zones in our waterways. High fecal
bacteria loads have caused our County Health Department to recommend no contact with the water for
two days after every rain. Stormwater runoff makes our waterways unfit for our pets or children to
swim in.
Please add PERSONAL EXAMPLE FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE of how poor water quality or
uncontrolled stormwater affects you.
Much of our County was developed with no or minimal storm water control. The only way to fix
these existing problems is for the land owners to pay a small fee ($25 or $35) dedicated to a Stormwater
Fund which would be protected and could not be used for general government purposes.
I am willing to pay $35 per year to clean up our waterways as long as I know that the money will
be used for that purpose and only that purpose. Restored waterways are important for our health, our
recreational use and our economy.
My community is extremely concerned about cleaning up our waterways and stopping the
erosion in our creeks. Please act now to restore our streams. Vote for Bill 79-11.
Sincerely,
