Clastic sedimentary rock
Chemical sedimentary rock
Objectives



Describe the major process in the formation of sedimentary rock.
Distinguish between clastic sedimentary rocks and chemical sedimentary rocks.
Identify some of the features that are unique to sedimentary rocks.
Classification of Sedimentary Rocks
Two Main Groups
1. Clastic Sedimentary Rock

•
Clastic sedimentary rock sedimentary rock that forms when fragments of
preexisting rocks are compacted or cemented together
Clastic sedimentary rocks are classified by the size of the sediments they contain.
Rock that contains large, rounded pieces is called conglomerate. Rock that
contains large, angular pieces is called breccia.
Rock that is composed of sand-sized grains is called sandstone. Rock that is
composed of clay-sized particles is called shale.
2. Chemical sedimentary rocks form when dissolved substances precipitate, or
separate, from water.
Common rocks include
• limestone—most abundant chemical rock
• microcrystalline quartz known as chert, flint, jasper, or agate
• evaporites such as rock salt or gypsum
• coal
Features of Some Sedimentary Rocks
Features of sedimentary rocks are clues to how and where the rocks are formed
