JONATHAN JAQUES CHILDREN’S CENTER OF MILLER CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Neuropsychology and School Reintegration Program 2801 Atlantic Ave., Suite 202 Long Beach, CA 90806 (562) 933-8600 # of Openings: 2 - 3 Advanced Practicum LEVEL: Practicum CONTACT: Teddi Softley, PhD LIAISON: Tenika Jackson, PsyD NATURE OF AGENCY / POPULATION SERVED The Jonathan Jaques Children’s Center is a division of Miller Children’s Hospital and serves children with cancer and blood diseases aged 0 – young adulthood. Approximately 70 newly diagnosed patients are seen in this center each year. The center provides services to a multiethnic population. The majority of patients and families are Latino. The Neuropsychology and School Reintegration Programs provide services to children and teens with cancer and blood diseases, with a specific emphasis on those at risk for cognitive deficits resulting from their diagnosed condition or treatments. DIRECT AND INDIRECT SERVICES Trainees will provide psychoeducational and neuropsychological assessment, provide feedback to patients and families, and advocate for appropriate educational services. Trainees will also assist with the emotional and social aspects of transitions into school following diagnosis with cancer or blood disease, and with long-term coping and adjustment in the school setting. Indirect services include interdisciplinary team consultation and contact with related agencies. THEORETICAL ORIENTATION Primarily Cognitive-Behavioral. SUPERVISION AND TRAINING One-hour/week of individual supervision by a licensed psychologist. One-hour/week of group supervision. There will also be extensive didactic training in neurocognitive effects of disease and treatment, and in appropriate assessment strategies, including a weekly neuropsychology seminar with didactic and case discussion components. Hands-on training will be provided in school reintegration interventions. Trainees may also attend regular medical education lectures and case conferences. Wednesdays preferred as the second day, but is negotiable. VACATION Two weeks. DISABILITY ACCESSIBILITY The entire medical center fully meets current standards for access by people with disabilities. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION This is a challenging population with serious medical problems. Health psychology orientation is not required, but applicants should be open to working within a medical orientation. Applicants require substantial maturity of judgment and emotional maturity. Previous testing experience preferred. Experience working with children is also preferred. Spanish skills are also helpful but not required. Preference is given to trainees who completed a Practicum I and have testing and Integrative Report Writing Skills. REVISED 10-12
