NATURE OF AGENCY / POPULATION SERVED
The Jonathan Jaques Children’s Center is a division of Miller Children’s Hospital and
serves children with cancer and blood diseases aged 0 – young adulthood.
Approximately 70 newly diagnosed patients are seen in this center each year. The
center provides services to a multiethnic population. The majority of patients and
families are Latino. The Neuropsychology and School Reintegration Programs provide
services to children and teens with cancer and blood diseases, with a specific emphasis
on those at risk for cognitive deficits resulting from their diagnosed condition or
treatments.
DIRECT AND INDIRECT SERVICES
Trainees will provide psychoeducational and neuropsychological assessment, provide
feedback to patients and families, and advocate for appropriate educational services.
Trainees will also assist with the emotional and social aspects of transitions into school
following diagnosis with cancer or blood disease, and with long-term coping and
adjustment in the school setting.
Indirect services include interdisciplinary team consultation and contact with related
agencies.
THEORETICAL ORIENTATION
Primarily Cognitive-Behavioral.
SUPERVISION AND TRAINING
One-hour/week of individual supervision by a licensed psychologist. One-hour/week of
group supervision. There will also be extensive didactic training in neurocognitive
effects of disease and treatment, and in appropriate assessment strategies, including a

Hands-on training will be provided in school reintegration interventions. Trainees may
also attend regular medical education lectures and case conferences.
