ECN Acquires Another Energy Modeling Tool - Nigeria Energy Calculator 2050
The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), as part of its mandate to produce strategic plans and
coordinate national policies in the field of energy in all its ramifications and to serve as a centre
for resolving technical issue in energy, has employed many computer-based tools for energy
planning and analyses over the years.
Such tools include Energy and Power Evaluation Program (ENPEP), Wien Automatic System
Planning (WASP) for electricity generation expansion planning and Model for Energy Supply
Strategy Alternative and their General Environmental Impacts (MESSAGE) for formulating and
evaluating alternative energy supply strategies. Others include Simplified Approach for
Estimating Environmental Impacts of Electricity (SIMPACTS), Model for Financial Analysis of
Electric System Expansion Plans (FINPLAN), which assesses the financial viability of plants
and projects as well as Energy Forecasting Framework and Emission Consensus Tools
(EFFECT).
In its determination to further promote sustainable energy development in Nigeria, the ECN has
again produced in collaboration with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) of
the United Kingdom, a modeling tool that interactively reveals the various energy demand and
supply pathways over long term periods and their consequent emissions, for Nigeria. It is called
The Nigeria Energy Calculator 2050 (NECAL2050). Its documentation has been produced to
guide a user in navigating and interpreting the tool. The Excel Version of the calculator can be
