Food from the Land Assessment Repot 50 Marks As a class, we are going to watch and learn about “The Life of a Farmer” through a video series on YouTube. We are going to use the following graphic organizer to organize the information by month and by topic. If you miss a video you can find it on YouTube – “Peterson Farm Bros” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9P-fU67tik&list=PLpniJUeAKfuo3AltgCzLLMYwxDg--Pt1q&index=1 January February Chores Chores Crops Livestock Livestock March April Chores Chores Crops Livestock Crops Farm Technology Livestock May Crops June Crops Chores Livestock Chores July August Chores Crops Crops Chores Livestock Livestock September Crops October Crops Chores Livestock November Livestock Chores December Chores Livestock REFLECTION/ASSESSMENT Task: Using your classroom assignments AND notes on the different Peterson Farm Brother month clips, respond to the 5 following course outcomes below. (10 marks each = 50 marks) The format is of your choosing – written paragraphs, report, PowerPoint, Prezi, poster board, etc… Outcomes/Assessment Outcomes to be assessed: - S2-KL-021 Identify physical conditions required to produce major food crops. Examples: topography, soil, climate, water... S2-KL-022 Explain ways in which natural- and human-caused phenomena affect food production. Examples: Severe/unpredictable weather condition (flooding), climate change, human contamination, pesticides, fertilizers etc…. S2-KL-023 Describe the impact of various SUSTAINABLE agricultural practices on the physical environment. Examples: practices that help reduce soil erosion, water erosion, soil infertility... S2-KE-044 Identify the stages involved in food production and distribution S2-KH-034 Give examples of ways in which food production has changed over time 1) S2-KL-021 Identify the physical conditions required to produce major successful food/farming crops. Examples: topography, soil, climate, water... Does Not Understand Outcome (0) - Not shown in the product created Limited Understanding of Outcome (1) - can list physical conditions, limited understanding of how they affect food crops Basic Understanding of Outcome (2) - can list and briefly explain physical conditions, basic understanding of how they affect the type and yield of food crops Good Understanding of Outcome (3) Excellent Understanding of Outcome (4) - can list and explain physical conditions and understands how each would affect the type and yield of food crops - can list and thoroughly explain physical conditions and understands how different combinations would affect the type and yield of food crops 2) S2-KL-022 Explain ways in which natural and human-caused phenomena affect food production/farming Examples: flooding/drought/pesticides/herbicides/manure etc…. Does Not Understand Outcome - Not shown in the product created Limited Understanding of Outcome - can list and explain natural or human caused phenomena, limited understanding of how they affect food production. Basic Understanding of Outcome Good Understanding of Outcome -can list and briefly explain natural and human caused phenomena, basic understanding of how they affect food production. - can list and explain natural and human caused phenomena, good understanding of how they both affect food production. Excellent Understanding of Outcome - can list and thoroughly explain various natural and human caused phenomena and how they affect food production. 3) S2-KL-023 Describe the impact of various SUSTAINABLE agricultural/farming practices on the physical environment. Examples: practices that prevent soil erosion, water quality, loss of soil fertility... Does Not Understan d Outcome - Not shown in the product created Limited Understanding of Outcome - Student can list and briefly explain 1-2 impacts of agricultural practices However, lacking impact/sustainabili ty factor. Basic Understanding of Outcome -can list and briefly explain 2-3 agricultural practices and their impact on the physical environment. Good Understanding of Outcome Excellent Understanding of Outcome - can list and explain the impacts of 2-3 agricultural practices on the physical environment and can connect it to sustainable agriculture. - can explain 2-3 physical conditions and understands how different combinations of agricultural practices would affect the health of the physical environment. Includes a connection to sustainable agriculture. 4) S2-KE-044 Identify the stages involved in food production (farming) and distribution. Discuss both the stages involved with crops and livestock (see below for specific requirements) Does Not Understand Outcome - Not shown in the product created Limited Understanding of Outcome - can list stages, with no examples or applications for why this is important Basic Understanding of Outcome - can list and briefly explain stages, with examples at each stage Good Understanding of Outcome Excellent Understanding of Outcome - describes all stages involved with examples, can apply this knowledge to what farmers need - describes all stages involved with examples, can apply this knowledge to what farmers need and how this affects consumers What to include: Crops - Planting process (what is involved?, when does it happen?) - Growing process (what helps it grow?, how?) - Harvesting process (how does it work?, what happens?, when?) - Taking it to market (how does this work?, why is it done? Livestock - Getting new cattle (why and how?) - Raising (feeding, grazing, how and when?) - Transporting and moving (why and how?) - Taking to market (what happens? how does it work?) 5) S2-KH-034 Give examples of ways in which food production (farming) has changed over time. Examples: technology, mechanization, size of farms, ages of farmers, rural depopulation/urbanization. Does Not Understand Outcome - Not shown in the product created Limited Understanding of Outcome - can list and briefly explain 1-2 changes, but explanations are vague; more detail is required. Basic Understanding of Outcome Good Understanding of Outcome -can list and briefly explain 1-2 ways food production has changed over time. - can explain 1-2 ways that food production has changed over time; details are present, but could be further explained. Excellent Understanding of Outcome - can explain 2-3 ways that food production has changed over time; excellent descriptions have been presented. Other Topics/Videos you may wish to watch from the Peterson Farm Brothers on YouTube……. - GPS on a Tractor o What does this look like? o How does it work? o Why is it important? **How has farming evolved/changed in the last 100 years? - Spreading Manure o What is the purpose? o What are the steps? - Bailing Straw o What is the purpose? o How does it work? As you can see, there are 5/6 outcomes being marked in this assessment. Therefore you should have a minimum of 5/6 paragraphs, slides, sections to your reflection/report.
