Tri-County GATE Council Grant Recipients 2008-09 STUDENT GRANTS (14 applicants) Kylie Foo Grade 11 Newbury Park High School, Conejo Valley Unified School District Project Goal: To provide aid for residents of northern Uganda by coordinating a benefit concert of local bands and a book drive. George McGuigan Grade 5 Wildwood Elementary School, Conejo Valley Unified School District Project Goal: To conduct research and prepare a presentation about tardigrades (microscopic organisms, aka “waterbears”) that can survive extreme environmental conditions. Brooke, Lauren, and Matthew Katz Grade 5 Westlake Hills Elementary School, Conejo Valley Unified School District Project Goal: To offer afterschool peer tutoring to students in the lower grades. PARENT GRANTS (6 applicants) Rene Hohls Grade 5 Banyan Elementary School, Conejo Valley Unified School District Project Goal: To launch and develop the Odyssey of the Mind program at Banyan Elementary School. Virginia Martinson Grade 4 San Antonio Elementary School, Ojai Unified Project Goal: To introduce students to photography as a documentary and artistic medium and to help them explore its many possibilities. TEACHER GRANTS (11 applicants) Amy Lobsinger Grade 8 Fesler Junior High School, Santa Maria-Bonita School District Project Goal: To purchase digital cameras provide differentiated modes of assessment and inquiry. Students will capture images, create short skits, and record short pieces that can be infused into Windows Movie Maker. Gina Danley Grade 3-6 All Sites, Santa Maria-Bonita School District Project Goal: To purchase sets of education and thought-provoking games (Quiddler and Wood Brain Teasers in a Tin) for every GATE classroom in the district. Marsha Johnson Grade 6 Kellogg School, Goleta Unified School District Project Goal: Students will conduct research and compare the contributions of ancient civilizations with examples in their community. Students will use photo journalism to create posters and a short newspaper article documenting their results.
