Suggested Fieldwork Kit for MSc Engineering Geology
SUGGESTED FIELDWORK KIT FOR MSC ENGINEERING GEOLOGY.
For those not familiar with the UK climate and/or with fieldwork, here is a suggested list
of clothing and equipment that you will need for fieldwork sessions. Fieldwork can be
quite ‘static’ - i.e. standing or sitting in one place for quite a while, taking measurements
and running some piece of equipment. Geological fieldwork can involve much walking
around from outcrop to outcrop. Hence you need to dress very well if the weather’s bad.
Treat it like hill-walking or mountain walking.
Essential: waterproof jacket AND trousers
Gortex is good – a set will cost £100-200. The jacket should have a built in hood and zips.
Essential: jacket/jumper
A fleece or woollen jumper. Go for the thickest available if you are not used to British
weather.
Shirts
Get a thick one, e.g. brushed cotton. Denim is NOT advised.
Trousers
Strong with pockets and windproof. AVOID Denim.
Thermal underwear
Top and bottoms - a good idea for the colder weather and for trips where there is a lot of
standing around.
Footwear
Good hill walking boots with good soles (Vibram) are best. Wellingtons can be useful but
easily result in cold feet in cold weather. You will need site safety boots (steel toe capped
boots) for the 1st week of the MSc Engineering Geology program.
Socks
Thick woollen socks or synthetic walking socks are best.
Essential in cold weather: Hat, gloves, scarf
Woollen hats that covers the ears, a woollen scarf and mittens or gloves that are windproof.
You should at least have a warm hat with you on all trips, even in summer.
Other very useful items
Thermos flask for hot drinks – unbreakable ones are best.

Junction 32 Shopping Village, Castleford.
It is worth checking which shops offer student discount and note that some sports shops in
the City Centre now also sell a range of outdoor gear (e.g sports direct)
