A Garden of Eden
March 18, 2016, Saint-Jean Cap-Ferrat, France
The gardens of Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, A
Four Seasons Hotel, are renowned throughout the
world for their beauty. Here, luxury resides in a haven of natural beauty spread over seven hectares (17
acres) in the heart of the Côte d’Azur.

As you wander through the gardens, most of the plants you encounter are native to the region. Alongside
the typical Mediterranean flora are certain species from various corners of the world, which are able to
flourish here thanks to a micro-climate that equally favours the growth of exotic plant life.
Part of the gardens was redesigned by famous landscape designer Jean Mus, during the renovation
program for this historic hotel carried out in 2009.
A team of passionate gardeners look after this delicately balanced space, and helps to ensure that
blossoming periods are spread throughout the year.
 Spring brings yellow forsythia, white arum lilies, yellow broom, violet milkwort, rosebushes, and the
highly fragrant star jasmine inundate our paths.
 Summer showcases rosebays, westringias, bougainvilleas and numerous species of hibiscus
(Chinese hibiscus, rose mallow, cotton rosemallow and more) brighten our gardens through until
autumn with their vivid, contrasting colours.
 Autumn itself is like a second spring. Unlike in northern climates where plants hibernate and flowers
disappear under the influence of cold and frost, on the Mediterranean coast, it rains and this rain
brings life back to the grasslands burnt by the summer sun, restores the green foliage of the holm
oaks and olive trees, and even revives some blooms normally considered to be spring flowers.
 Winter shows a floral display that remains spectacular, thanks to the extraordinary and extremely
dense yellow of the acacias (mimosa). The camellias are also bewitching with their vivid blooms.
The Grand-Hôtel’s estate comprises several different planted areas where nature is either subdued or left to
its own free will to delight the senses:
 The Zen Garden, by Jean Mus, offers a variation of plants on the theme of the colour green,
complemented by the unobtrusive blooms of star jasmine, wisteria, box, and ferns.
 The Cactus Garden is planted with spurges, opuntia.
 Club Dauphin’s gardens, which are 100 percent natural, are full of species that naturally grow on
the rocks (pittosporum, yellow euryops, dimorphothecas and more).
 The estate is protected from prying eyes by a natural barrier made exclusively of leafy plants with
unobtrusive flowers (bay laurel, eugenia, and more).
 The Pine Forest is replete with Aleppo pines, maritime pines, holm oaks, olive trees, eucalyptus and
figs. Some of these trees, such as the Monterey cypress at the Hotel’s entrance, are a hundred
years old.
The Grand-Hôtel’s aim is to offer an exceptional natural environment on the Côte d’Azur, staying as close to
nature as possible.
