Aleksandra Smiljanić School of Electrical Engineering Belgrade University, Belgrade Tel: (38164) 370-9539 Email: [email protected], [email protected] Web: http://home.etf.rs/~aleksandra/english.html BIOGRAPHY Aleksandra Smiljanić received M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Princeton University in 1996 and 1999, respectively. She completed B.Sc. in electrical engineering at Belgrade University in 1993. Her area of research are the architectures and the protocols for high-capacity packet switches and Internet routers. She has also worked on the scheduling algorithms for packet-switched ring networks. Currently, Aleksandra works as a full professor at Belgrade University in Serbia. Aleksandra Smiljanić became the Corresponding Member of the Serbian Engineering Academy in 2015. Aleksandra’s first work experience were two summer internships at NEC USA on a design of the packet switch with terabit capacity. She had worked for AT&T Labs from 1999 until 2004. At AT&T Labs Aleksandra worked on the research in the area of high-capacity packet switches and routers, and on the evaluation of Internet core routers and multiservice edge routers offered by various vendors. She also worked as an adjunct professor at Stony Brook University in New York, and as a research professor at Polytechnic Institute of NYU. Aleksandra was the first Serbian Minister for Telecommunications and Information Society from 2007 till 2008. Aleksandra Smiljanić is leading the projects on the Internet router design financed by the Serbian Ministry of Science since 2005. In these projects, roughly seven full-time researchers, and many students have built a functional prototype of the Internet router based on the FPGA devices. Developed prototype has several advanced features so far: it provides non-blocking for both the unicast and the multicast traffic; it can support significantly larger number of IPv6 addresses than the existing solutions; and it implements a novel routing protocol based on load balancing which provides significantly higher throughput for arbitrary traffic pattern compared to the current routing protocols. In the current project, open-source routing softwares such as Xorp and Quagga have been used for the control plane. At the same time, performance of these software suites is being optimized, and new protocols are implemented and added to the suites. Aleksandra Smiljanić is the author of numerous conference and journal papers in the area of high performance switching and routing. She is the inventor of ten US patents. Some of these patents have been patented in Europe, Japan and China as well. In 2009, Aleksandra got the Ilija Stojanović Award for the best journal paper in the area of communications sponsored by the Telenor Fondation. One paper that she mentored got the Outstanding Paper Award at IEEE Conference on High Performance of Switching and Routing 2012. Two of the papers that she mentored got the Best Student Awards at ETRAN 2009, 2012 and 2014, and another one at Telfor 2009. These papers were related to the routing protocols. She also mentored the master thesis that was awarded by Belgrade Chamber of Commerce as the Best Master Thesis in 2005/2006. Aleksandra Smiljanić is the author of the Best Papers at IEEE Conference on High Performance Switching and Routing 2000, and IEICE/IEEE Workshop on High Performance Switching and Routing 2002. These awarded papers proposed the scheduling algorithms for terabit packet switches. She got the Research Excellence Award at AT&T Labs in 2000. She is a recipient of the Aleksandar Damjanović Award as the best student in her class at Belgrade University, 1993. Before university, she won numerous prizes in Yugoslav and international competitions in mathematics and physics. Aleksandra Smiljanić was the editor of OSA Journal on Optical Networking in a period 2003-2009. She served as as the editor of IEEE Communication Letters from 2005 until 2011. Aleksandra was the General Chair of IEEE Conference on High-Performance Switching and Routing 2012. Aleksandra Smiljanić works as an independent expert for the European Commission on the evaluation and monitoring of FP7 projects. She is also a Guest Editor of the JSAC Special Issue on “Switching and Routing in Scalable and Energy-Efficient Datacenter Networks”. EDUCATION 1996-1999 Ph.
