TSUNAMI WORKSHEET
Answer the following questions:
1. How big can a tsunami get? The tsunami get’s 18m taller than the average wave.
2. What causes tsunamis? The tsunami is caused by seismic activity in which is the
movement of the Earth’s crust. Tsunami is fast, high-energy waves related to
earthquakes or volcanic eruption on the seafloor.
3. How far can a tsunami travel? The tsunami can travel thousands of kilometers from its
source. It can also as fast as 800 km/h (480 mph).
4. Why are tsunamis more dangerous for docked boats than for boats in the open ocean?
The tsunamis are more dangerous for docked boat than for boats in the open ocean
because in the dock the boats are tied up and can’t go anywhere they get distroied and
for a boat in the ocean it has the freedom to go anywhere it can,
5. What kind of instrument is used to detect if a tsunami is heading for Hawaii? The instrument that is
used to detect if a tsunami is heading for Hawaii is a seismographs (earthquake
detector). A loud alarm goes off along the coast warning people to head for the hills.
6. Why do you think tsunamis occur most commonly in the Pacific Ocean? I think tsunamis occur
most in the Pacific Ocean because there are a lot of volcano’s there and the plates shift.
7. Why do you think it is safer to be on high ground when a tsunami is coming? I think it is safer to be
on high ground when a tsunami is coming because it will be harder for the wave to
reach you and the farther you are from the ocean the less strong it gets.
