Solution-based methods allow producing nanomaterials with unmatched degree of control
over size, shape, phase and composition of the crystalline domains. At the same time, the
availability of materials in solution or as nano-inks enables a large volume and high yield
fabrication of devices over a variety of substrates by cost-effective printing and coating
technologies.
However solution-processing technologies are not without limitations. The presence of
organic ligands, the large density of surface defects and the difficult control over the carrier
concentration are three main challenges to be overcome to fabricate efficient energy
conversion devices.
In this talk the potential of solution-based synthesis routes and solution-processing
technologies to produce low cost functional nanomaterials and films with nanometer-scale
control over their composition, crystal phase, geometry and size will be discussed. I will also
discuss on the advantages and limitations of these technologies to fabricate efficient energy
conversion devices able to compete with current conventional technologies. I will
particularly focus on the application of nanoparticles for solar energy conversion.
