BIRCO offers innovative channel systems for surface drainage
A family business with tradition and a pioneering spirit
BIRCO GmbH, based in Baden-Baden, is one of Europe's leading drainage specialists
and manufacturers of channel systems. Founded in 1927 by Fritz Birnbräuer, the
company develops today drainage concepts for areas such as heavy duty, environment,
landscaping, design and project management. BIRCO continually focuses upon quality,
durability and innovation: The BIRCOpur filtration system sets a benchmark for rainwater
treatment systems. The modular
channel system
combines
functional
safety,
performance and easy maintenance, and makes a significant economic and ecological
contribution towards groundwater replenishment. In 2000 Frank Wagner, the founders
grandson, took over 100 percent of the company’s shares. Since then he has been the
Managing Director of the BIRCO Group. Christian Merkel, who previously held the
position of Technical Director for many years, has been the Managing Partner of the
BIRCO GmbH since 2006. The products are marketed through a comprehensive
distribution network in Germany as well as subsidiaries in France and Dubai. BIRCO
works as well with several licensees and exclusive sales partners in other European
countries.
Individual, reliable and dependable: drainage systems from BIRCO
BIRCO produces channel systems made of concrete and steel with an HDPE lining for
acid protection that has been manufactured in accordance with the German Water
Management Act (WHG). The channels are not only used for drainage but also the safe
discharge of less aggressive fluids – from areas subject to heavy loads to drainage in
building construction. "Environmentally-sound drainage is essential in areas that are
subject to heavy loads, such as airports. Water-hazardous substances that can leak out
during aircraft fueling, for example, must be safely discharged through the channel. We
have developed a suitable channel concept for this purpose", explains Frank Wagner.
The company also sells BIRCO drainage chambers by StormTech® for retention and
decentralized seepage of rainwater. Through the system's precise design and layout,
high levels of rainfall can be quickly and effectively transported to the next trough — even
over long distances. All drainage systems provide a wide range of gratings for all load
classes
and
ensure
creative
freedom
along
with
maximum
functionality.

The options range from gratings made of casting, galvanized steel and stainless steel
through illuminated channel and grating systems to designer gratings as well as a special
integrated guide system for visually impaired persons. "Our designer grating products
lend a fresh and attractive touch to drainage in external areas. We want to emphasize
that functionality and visual appearance are compatible. The best example is our
integrated guide system for visually impaired persons", explains Christian Merkel.
Pioneering spirit from Baden-Baden
The company was originally founded in 1927 as a coal and building materials supplier. In
the early 1950s, the company recognized the huge potential of concrete drainage
channels in the agricultural sector: The production and sale of these channels became
the company's core business. In 1965, the Baden-Baden firm was the first German
manufacturer to bring a concrete channel with a mesh grating onto the market. The
company has since specialized in the production of robust and environmentally friendly
channel systems for surface drainage and has developed drainage concepts for such
competence areas as heavy load, environment, landscaping, design, and project
management.
