According to the World Health Organization, different periodontal diseases affect 50% of
children and more than 80% of adults all over the world. There are two main types of periodontal
diseases: gingivitis and periodontitis. Both of them are inflammatory diseases, closely connected
with each other, with general causes and similar clinical picture at their early stages. Gingivitis is
an inflammatory gum disease, when gums become red, edematous and bleed easily. It is cured by
every day tooth brushing. The next stage of the disease is called periodontitis, when
inflammatory processes penetrate into internal structure of periodont tissues, leading to the high
tooth mobility and further extraction of them. About 75% of adolescents suffer from
periodontitis. Periodontitis can lead to paradontosis. Nowadays this disease can`t be cured.
According to different authors, incidence of periodontal diseases mostly occurs at the age
of 35 - 45 years (from 65 to 98%) and 15 – 19 years (from 55 to 98%). Incidence of
periodontitis among population of Russia, starting from the age of 13, amounts to 48,2% .
Formation of dental tartar is detected in 18,6%, bleeding of gums - in 29,6%. Incidence of
periodontal diseases among adult population of Russia is approaching 100%, and only 1% - seek
for medical care.
On the basis of the accumulated experience, latest scientific discoveries in the sphere of biology,
medicine, microelectronics and possibilities of the modern nanotechnologies, a construction of
therapeutic toothbrush with LEDs was developed. The idea of invention of a toothbrush with
LEDs belongs to Tomsk scientists from the Research Institute of Semi-Conductor Devices.
Earlier they have invented devices with LEDs named as Geska`s and Diun`s devices, used for
treatment of different diseases and applied in physiotherapy.
Mechanism of action of toothbrush with LEDs is based on the method of Photodynamic
therapy. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves the use of a photosensitizer that is activated by
exposure to light of a specific wavelength in the presence of oxygen. The transfer of energy from
the activated photosensitizer to available oxygen results in the formation of toxic oxygen species,
such as singlet oxygen and free radicals. These very reactive chemical species can damage
proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and other cellular components.
In 1990 employees of Eastman Dental Institute, London, professors M.Wilson and G.Pearson
proved that PDT can kill all bacteria detected in the oral cavity during infection of dentin, root
canals, periodont diseases, thus removing the cause of occurrence of the most wide-spread
diseases of the oral cavity.
In 2003 on the basis of Novosibirsk State Medical Academy trials were held. They proved
efficacy of LEDs usage for treatment of such diseases as: acute respiratory diseases with
episodes of acute rhinitis, acute tracheitis – 22 people; chronic periodontitis with episodes of
gingivitis – 14 people;post-operational and traumatic infected slowly granulating wounds – 15
people. One of the research results was the proved therapeutic efficacy of PT with LEDs, which
amounted to 68-77% during oral diseases.
Longa Vita toothbrush with LEDs has new consumer-friendly features and unique
therapeutic properties.
 Based on the method of PDT
Usage of photodynamic effect allows to compensate negative consequences occurring
due to mechanical tooth brushing.
 Two red and one blue LEDs in the toothbrush head
They enhance blood circulation and nutritive processes in the gingival tissues, eliminate
gingivitis, eliminate gingival edema, recover oral cavity from pathogenic bacteria.
Usage of irradiations of blue (420-450nm) and (or) purple (400-350 nm) spectrums
having expressed antibacterial properties in the offered toothbrush allow to totally refuse
from or greatly decrease amount of antibacterial substances introduced into the toothpaste
compositions.

Construction of brushing head is supplied with semiconductor sources of incoherent
monochromatic irradiation, which provide irradiation of surfaces of the oral cavity.
 For prophylaxis and treatment of periodontal diseases
It is designed for prophylaxis and treatment of inflammatory and degenerative oral
diseases, especially periodontal diseases – acute and chronic catarrhal gingivitis,
paradontosis, stomatitis.
 Automatic Timer
Automatic Timer installed into the toothbrush allows to control time of tooth brushing
 It can be used both with traditional toothpastes and with a specially developed
therapeutic toothpaste Longa Vita with chlorophyll, which enhances therapeutic effect of
LEDs.
 There are no analogues to this therapeutic toothbrush.
However, the main types of toothbrushes, available in the market nowadays, which can
compete with our toothbrush, are manual, sonic, electrical, ultra sonic toothbrushes. The
principle competitive advantage of tooth brush with LEDs is its therapeutic effect, not
high price (except for manual competitors), its affordability for wide layers of population,
and its automatic timer, installed into the toothbrush handle, allowing control of toothbrushing time. It is planned to market this toothbrush with LEDs in the niche “effective oral
hygiene, prophylaxis and treatment of oral care diseases”. Consumer of these toothbrushes is
every person older than 14 years old.
More details about value of Red light and Blue light
It is well-known that oral cavity contains a great number of pathogenic and conditionally
pathogenic microflora. Modern methods of fight in terms of pathogenic microflora control imply
introduction into toothpaste composition of antibacterial agents, more often synthetic ones (for
example, triclosan, methronidasol and etc.), what negatively affects useful microflora of the oral
cavity and intestinals, because during tooth brushing 30% of the toothpaste are absorbed by
mucosa and swallowed, and consequently causes dysbacteriosis not only of the oral cavity, but
also of the gastrointestinal tract.
Red light stimulates and activates metabolism of gum tissues, stimulates immunity through
acupuncture channels and normalizes functioning of gums at the expense of its deep internal
penetration in depth of 5-6mm and its ability to achieve nerve fibres and blood vessels (Pic. 1).
Value and influence of red light on the organism has been known since ancient times and has
been widely used in dermatology and cosmetology for normalization of functioning of tissues
and metabolism. In Chinese medicine this process is called activation of “acupuncture channels”.
Usage of irradiations of blue (420-450 nm) and (or) violet (400 – 350 nm) spectrums, which
have well-pronounced antibacterial properties, allows to brush teeth and between teeth
effectively and significantly eliminates quantity of antibacterial substances contained in
toothpaste composition.
Red light up to 5 mm
Blue light
1-2 mm
Pic. 1. Penetration depth of red and blue light during exposure on the skin and mucosae
Blue light doesn`t penetrate deeper than 1-2mm and strikes pathogenic bacteria of the oral cavity
Streptococcus mutants, which are always present in the mouth, and Porphyromonas gingivalis
and Prevotella intermedia, occurrence of which gives evidence for the development of a
pathogenic process and gum disease.
Blue light can
eliminate
inflammation in the
depth of 1-2 mm.
Streptococcus grow
as a chain which
forms dental plaque
After treatment with
a blue light, bacterial
chains have been
destructed, and the
plaque can be
replaced easily and
safely.
Pic. 2. Principle of action of the blue light on bacteria of the oral cavity.
At the present time, it is well-known that during tooth brushing the surface of gums and mucosae
are inevitably injured by the bristles, and microinjuries and scars occur. Loose gum tissue
affected by paradontosis is particularly vulnerable, what is almost always accompanied by
bleeding of gums, and traumatization causes its inflammation and can lead to periodontitis and
formation of abscess (also called gumboil).
By using irradiations of one or several wavelengths during tooth brushing, carious therapeutic
effects can be achieved purposefully.
With their anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating properties, irradiations of cold spectrums –
especially, the blue one (430 nm) – allow to jugulate an acute inflammatory disease in gum
tissues, induced by the traumatizing effect of the bristles, removes edema of tissues, which
always accompanies inflammation, allow to conduct an effective sanitation of oral cavity from
pathogenic bacteria at the expense of bacteriostatic action and help to increase immune
resistance of the organism by means of stimulation of immune system.
Effect of “warm” irradiation, especially, the red one (660-680 nm), allows to improve local
microcirculation and processes of tissue trophism significantly, normalize rheological properties
of the blood and stimulate processes of cell regeneration. Resonant frequency is 662 nm. Visible
irradiation of this spectrum area (red one) is the most deeply penetrating into tissues and it
provides the best effect of photostimulation.
Unique features of Longa Vita toothpaste:
 serves as a photosensitizer in PDT
 gently removes dental plaque;
 reduces gingival hemorrhage;
 increases acid resistance of enamel.
 additional active components: coniferous-carotene concentrate – prevents from the gum
inflammation, eliminates bad breath and contributes to healing process of wounds and
aphthae. Sodium monofluorophosphate — stimulates recovery of mineral composition of
enamel, delays the formation of acids harmful to enamel.
 meets needs of younger children
Thanks to its ingredients, such as coniferous-carotene concentrate with the sufficient
concentration of chlorophyll and a complex of natural vitamin-mineral compounds
stimulating processes of tissue regeneration and stimulation of local metabolism, it meets
needs of younger children who cannot control the process of swallowing toothpaste
during tooth brushing.
At the present time, large-scale preclinical and clinical researches on the efficacy of
photodynamic therapy in the treatment of periodontal diseases have been conducted, but methods
offered for this require complex, expensive equipment and, consequently, they are almost
unavailable for great masses of population.
Usage of special toothbrushes and pastes allows to make this effective method of prophylaxis
and sanitation of the oral cavity available almost to all layers of the population, what can
certainly play a significant role in health improvement of great masses.
