As technology advanced and introduction of satellite positioning became widely used for navigation, the
function of a lighthouse evolved to more than just a warning aid for mariners at sea but it inherited a symbolic
and highly sentimental significance. Similar to a fateful watchdog waiting for his owner’s return the
lighthouse bestows a sense of comfort and hope as it signifies safe return home. In the darkness, the beam
of light shines deep into the sea as sign of salvation and safe passage to familiar waters. Uplifting and
transcendent the light itself becomes the essence of a lighthouse.
Arising from the wreckage of Costa Concordia, 32 light posts derived from pieces of the sunken ship bring
into existence a place of permanence and commemoration. A place defined from an undifferentiated whole
by a memory of the evens of January 13, 2013 and rooted by a symbol of strength, hope and rebirth. The
tectonic elements of the lighthouse solidifying a sense of place, belonging and familiarity while vertical
extension taking on a symbolic reference of aspirations towards truth, immortality and oneness with All.
On anniversary day of the tragic event, the lighthouse is transformed from a humble structure into a beacon
of light reaching tremendous heights bridging the gap between the horizon and the sky, the earthly and the
divine, to create a moment of reflection.
