Project Description - In summary form briefly describe the project.
ADRA Nepal is responding to the disaster affected population with various emergency response
projects. In dhading district, ADRA is focusing on Health, WASH & Hygiene, Livelihood and Shelter
sectors for humanitarian assistance. The affected population have slowly started to come back to
their regular life after disastrous event of earthquakes and its continuous tremors. For the
Households who have lost everything in the disaster, meeting their basic needs of food and shelter
can be a struggle. In the mean while, recovering from the damages and overcome the stress are
the challenges in coming days when they have lost their standing crops in the field along with
stored food, seed stocks, storage facilities, livestock and other livelihood assets.
The goal of distribution of agricultural tools to the agricultural households is to help them rePage | 1

establish agricultural activities and production. It has been found that the farmers have to modify
the tools that are been industrially produced to their habits of utilisations. For that reasons, the
agricultural tools that are supposed to be distributed will be produced locally respecting the design
of the tools that the farmers are acquainted to use with an aim to promote local skills.
This project envisages helping the farmers from disadvantaged groups, women headed
households as well as the local trade, skills and manpower.
What are the main development issues among the target population?
The target districts ranks low in overall Human Development Index (HDI) as well as in Human
Poverty Index (HPI). Poverty alleviation is of the major challenges to the government of Nepal in
order to achieve its MDGs strategy. However, poverty is widespread and severe in rural areas and
among disadvantaged social groups particularly in Dalits and indigenous ethnic groups;
persistently 73% in agriculture (63% farmer and 11% agricultural labourers).
The marginalisation of disadvantaged social groups restrains their social and economic
development due to the lack of access to land, finances, rights and entities from the government
combined with limited level of awareness, education and information. Caste and gender based
discrimination and exclusion have worsened the situation. Poverty levels are more severe among
women (irrespective of caste and ethnicity), due to lack of ownership rights and control over
household resources e.g. land, livestock and financial assets. Due to all persisting disparities, the
disadvantages groups face difficulties to uplift their living standard and participate in the
sustainable livelihood activities.
How does the project address the need?
The project will target the subsistence oriented agricultural household with higher vulnerabilities
and less coping capacity to the impact of disaster.
After the disaster, the households which have lost their means of livelihood are worried about the
family future. Their main concern is what to do and how to restart their principal occupation as they
have no other means of livelihood. Therefore, timely intervention is vital in this context because
there is a risk of food insecurity in the affected communities if they cannot go back to agricultural
production.
Meanwhile, others trades of the community are also been affected by earthquake, one of them is
local skills and manpower. The blacksmiths belongs to marginalised groups of the Nepalese
society based on caste system. They are equally affected by earthquake and have lost everything
increasing their stress-bundle. Helping them to re-establish their trade will also support to rebuild
their livelihood. Hence, it is essential to design a multi-aspect project to incorporate different
factions of the society bringing them together to participate in the recovery and rehabilitation phase
of their livelihood. Therefore, this project has aimed to provide agricultural tools to the vulnerable
households produced by local blacksmiths to get their feet back on the ground and become normal

again.
How was the information regarding the needs collected? Primary, Secondary. Focus group,
survey.
ADRA Nepal in partnership with local NGO is responsible for managing the overall project including
planning, monitoring, and supervision. ADRA will coordinate with the target community members of
the respective participating communities to assess capacity and vulnerabilities of target
beneficiaries and finalize other decisions related to the project. The ADRA Staff will conduct M&E
and submit quarterly reports of monitoring. In addition, ADRA Nepal will also work closely with the
local level government line agencies so as to avoid the duplication of activities in the target
communities. Project staff will also conduct focus group discussions with the beneficiaries,
relevant stakeholders, CBOs during their monitoring visits.
What is the main objective of the project?
The overall goal of the project is to provide vulnerable subsistence agricultural households with
agricultural tools and promoting skills of local blacksmiths in order to re-establish their livelihood
activities after the disaster.
What is the first main activity to accomplish the objective?
To provide livelihood generating assets: The project will provide to selected beneficiaries with
agricultural tools to restart their agricultural activities. Further, the agricultural tools will be
manufactured by local blacksmiths.

How would you briefly describe this project to a potential donor?
Mr. Dil bahadur Tamang is a 35 year old farmer from Tsarfu, Dhading district. He is from
indigenous group. According to village committee, with the earthquake, 40 percent of 80
households is expected to suffer from food insecurity.
After distributing Food items and other relief materials, ADRA gifted agricultural tools to the
vulnerable households who have lost everything in the disaster.
“My family and I have 1 hectare of agricultural field and a garden where we grow vegetables. We
also have cow and goats. Before the earthquake, we had enough food, especially rice, for the
whole family. We also cultivated vegetables and sold them in the market. But, food was not a
problem.”
“But when earthquake hit, we lost a lot. The standing crops were destroyed and harvest was not
good, our storage facility was destroyed and also we lost most of our agricultural tools. This year
will be bad because bad harvest and post-harvest lost because access to proper storage facilities
is limited. I’m happy ADRA provided us with agricultural hand tools. We will use them in our garden
and fields, because without tools we could not work efficiently and grow enough crops.”
