Tel: +604-3822539, Fax:+604-3822812 Synthetic and organic fertilizers are well-known by every farmer to be used as soil enhancer, but synthetic fertilizer is the one that gets more attention due to its effectiveness. The purpose of this project is to acknowledge the advantages of organic fertilizer as a safe nutrients source in nurturing the plants. Organic fertilizer; “OCabb” that was made from coffee grounds and biochar made from banana stems was produced. The novelty of this product is there is no organic fertilizer made from a combination of coffee ground and biochar. Coffee grounds are slightly acidic and full of nitrogen, a mineral that aids plant growth whereas biochar made from banana stems are rich with Penang Invention, Innovation And Research Design 2017 (PIID 2017) potassium, phosphorus and calcium that provides plants with nutrients that are needed for the plants to thrive, and it acts as a soil remediation. Coffee grounds are used as an additive in biochar made from banana stems. The utilization of OCabb is essential in enhancing the remediation of the soil in removing contaminants in soil and at the same time, it also nurturing the soil as a fertilizer. From proximate and ultimate analysis conducted using OCabb, it was found that the nutrients and other elements needed for the growth of plants are extravagantly sufficient. This product has a great potential in commercialization since it could enhance and nurturing the growth of plants and in the meantime, it could increase the awareness and promotion of organic fertilizer as renewable, biodegradable, sustainable and environmentally friendly product. Keywords biochar, banana stems, coffee grounds, organic fertilizer. Product description OCabb is an organic fertilizer that is created by using two types of material that are known as banana stem and coffee grounds. The banana stem acts as . biochar, which predominates most of the product, and coffee grounds that acts as additive to the biochar. OCabb are economical because the materials used can be obtain easily without spending too much. Besides, the two material are renewable which are unlimited in supply besides biodegradable. The usage of OCabb can remove contaminants in soil and at the same time, it also nurture the soil as a fertilizer. Instead of letting coffee grounds and banana stems takes up unnecessary space in a landfill, organic fertilizers can be produced from these two materials. In comparison to using chemical fertilizers, OCabb (which is organic) promotes a sustainable way of making sure that the plants will receive all the nutrients they need. Benefit to mankind OCabb is conducive for agriculture field. This organic fertilizer that contain biochar may improve the characteristics of the soil by promoting microbial activity, increasing cation exchange capacity and increasing the nutrients of the soil. It has a huge potential in encouraging the farmers and others to use organic fertilizer instead of chemical fertilizer. It also helps to increase the growth rates of animals as animal feed additives and medium for filtration due to improve water quality. Potential commercialization OCabb is made up from biochar that will improve nutrients and water retention in soils thereby increasing agronomic efficiency and yield. Biochar as soil amendments will give advantages such as improved water holding capacity at the root zone and improve soil biological production. These benefits will add value for biochar product. It also has an ability to absorb nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater stream by increasing its cation and anion exchange capacity.
