Notes:
A rock is made up of two or more minerals.
1. Igneous
2. sedimentary
3. Metamorphic
Rocks that form when magma or lave cool and harden
Magma is liquid rock under the earth’s surface and lava ia liquid rock on the
surface of the earth.
Intrusive and extrusive rocks
Intrusive: forms from magma
cooling slowly under the earth’s
surface, contain large crystals
Extrusive: forms form lava cooling
quickly on the surface of the earth, finegrained or glassy.
Metamorphic rocks form when heat, pressure, or fluids act on igneous,
sedimentary, or other metamorphic rocks.
The heat and pressure can change the rocks form, composition, or both. The
amount of heat and the direction of pressure along with the composition of
the rock determines what the metamorphic rock will look like.
Foliated rocks - when mineral grains Nonfoliated rocks - when mineral grains
flatten and line up in parallel layers
grow and rearrange but do not form
layers.
How are sedimentary rocks
formed?
What are the three types of
sedimentary rocks?
Sedimentary rocks form when sediments are pressed and cemented together.
Define and draw a picture
of:
Chemical
Form when mineralrich water from
geysers, hot springs,
or salty lakes
evaporate.
Limestone, rock salt,
dolostone.
1. Detrital
2. Chemical
3. Organic
Detrital - Made of grains
of minerals or other
rocks.
Other minerals dissolved
in water act to cement
particles together, and
the weight of the
sediment above them
also squeezes or
compacts the layers
into rock.
Organic
Rocks made of once
living things
Summary:
There are three basic types of rocks, each type has specific characteristics that create subtypes within
them. Any of them can be transformed into any other type of rock by going through the rock cycle.
