Draw and label the allium leaf epidermis using the prepared slide under 400X magnification. Label the stomata and any other parts that you can identify. _____________________________ _____________________________ 2. Draw and label the lettuce leaf epidermis using the wet mount slide under 400X magnification. Label the stomata and any other parts that you can identify. _____________________________ _____________________________ Name:____________________________ Date:_____________________________Period:_____ 3. Below are two pictures of a leaf epidermis as seen under 400X. Label the stomata and any other parts that you can identify in each. Reflecting on What You’ve Done 1. What is the role of stomata in the leaf of a plant? Stomata are tiny openings in the epidermis of the leaf that open and close to help the leaf to absorb and get rid of water.____ 2. why would one type of leaf have more stomata than another type of leaf? _Stomata help with gas exchange in the leaf and so perhaps if there are more stomata, more photosynthesis is occurring (CO2 in and O2 out) or water is plentiful and being released as water vapor from the leaf. 3. Why would the stomata of one leaf be a different shape (open or closed) than stomata of another leaf? If there is a lot of water in the leaf (epidermis), then the guard cells swell and the stoma is formed. If there is a lot of sunshine, the stoma are also formed to allow photosynthesis to occur to make glucose (sugar) for plant growth. 4. During what time of day, would stomata be more likely to be open? _Stoma are usually open during the day 5. Why do you think that is important to a plant? The daytime is when there is sunlight to provide the energy to make food for plants. Name:____________________________ Date:_____________________________Period:_____ Challenge Question 6. If we experienced a drought, predict what you think would happen to the number and shape of the stomata in the leaves of an outdoor plant? Explain your answer. The shape of the stomata would be closed with the guard cells flaccid (floppy) with little or no water inside them. There would be few stomata in the leaves as the openings would close to try to preserve water and keep the plant alive.
