Template 2: Qualification Change - 2013
Proposal Description
R
Purpose of the proposal
(i)
To amend the title of the existing BCom major in “Management Science and Operations Management” to
“Operations and Supply Chain Management”;
(ii)
To update the graduating requirements for the BCom major in “Operations and Supply Chain Management”;
(iii)
To remove the option of taking MSCI as part of the BCom(Hons), BSc(Hons), MSc
(iv)
To indicate that the MCom in MSCI will be discontinued in 2015 and no further enrolments are possible.
Justification
At the May 2012 meeting of the University Council a resolution was passed that all Operations Research courses taught
as part of the Management Science programme were to be discontinued above 100 level and that implementation of
this decision was left to University Management.
Subsequent to this four undergraduate Operations Research courses were discontinued for 2013 (MSCI202, 203, 301
and 302) and all the postgraduate MSCI courses were either discontinued or not offered. MSCI201 was retained in
2013, as this was a majoring requirement for the BCom majoring in Management Science and Operations Management.
With the adoption of the change in title and graduating requirement, MSCI201 would no longer be offered. Note that
since 2011 operations management courses have been double coded as both MSCI and MGMT, with operations
management courses being numbered in the 270-279 and 370-379 ranges under both subject codes.
The College proposes to modify slightly and rename the current “Management Science and Operations Management”
BCom major to “Operations and Supply Chain Management”. The major will be based primarily on Operations and
Supply Chain Management courses taught by remaining staff with relevant teaching and research expertise within the
department. The proposal is supported by student enrolment numbers in Operations and Supply Chain Management
courses. The final year (300 level) Operations Management courses had an average class size of 31 in 2011; while 2012
the average class size was 35.75. Thus, the proposal is consistent with the University and College’s strategic goal of
concentrating its resources upon sustainable qualifications, programmes and courses for which there is student
demand.
The new major requires students to substitute MSCI201 (which will be discontinued from 2014) for MGMT/MSCI 271 as
MGMT/MSCI271 is a prerequisite for our other 300 level operations management courses. The major will also specify
the required course for the BCom as the MGMT version of the course rather than MSCI to indicate that postgraduate
study in the area is now through the MGMT BCom honours route.
With the removal of the postgraduate MSCI courses (which were primarily Operations Research courses) it is no longer
possible to teach the BCom(Hons), BSc(Hons) or MSc in MSCI. As there is currently one student studying a MCom in
MSCI, it is proposed that this programme be discontinued from 2015.
Acceptability
The changes to the BCom were first proposed in the change proposal circulated on 3 February 2012 for consultation to
all staff within the College of Business and Economics, to UC Tertiary Education Union officials, and to UC central Human
Resource personnel. The change proposal was then accepted by the University Council and subsequently most 200 and
all 300 level Operations Research courses were discontinued or not offered for 2013. All students affected were advised
of the changes and told of the options available for them to complete their degrees. Students were advised in 2012 of
the need to take MSCI271 in order to complete their degree.
Students were verbally surveyed on their reaction to a potential Name Change of the major. Those who took more
Operations Research courses at 200 level under a “Management Science and Operations Management” major wished to

have the option of graduating with this major, however most of these students will have finished by the end of 2013.
Students who had majored in operations management were happy with the change in name.
Goals of the programme and Graduate Profile.
Neither the Goals of the Programme nor Graduate profile for the BCom are affected by this change.
Outcome statement (BCom)
The BCom major in Operations and Supply Chain Management provides graduates with the skills and understanding to
enable them to function as, for example, Supply Chain Managers, Production Planners, Operations Managers, Quality
Managers, Project Managers, Procurement Managers, Business Analysts and Management Consultants.
Programme overview (BCom)
At the 100-level the major in Operations and Supply Management requires students to complete MSCI 101
Management Science as well as the BCom core courses (ACIS 102 Accounting and Financial Information, INFO 123
Information Systems and Technology, ECON 104 or 105 Micro or Macro Economics, STAT 101 Statistics 1, MGMT 100
Fundamentals of Management). This provides students with a broad commerce background as well as an introduction
to Management Science from an operations perspective.
At the 200-level the majoring requirements are for students to complete, MGMT 270 Introduction to Operations and
Supply Chain Management, MGMT 271 Operations Management Processes, and MGMT 280 Statistical Methods for
Management. This introduces students to the fundamentals of Operations and Supply Chain Management and the tools
for statistical analysis of business situations in preparation for 300-level courses.
At 300-level all students must complete at least 45 points of MGMT 300-level courses in Operations Management and
Supply Chain including MGMT 370 Strategic Operations and Supply Chain Management (15 points). MGMT 370 provides
a capstone course for the programme, integrating material from the entire programme into the Operations and Supply
Chain context. The other 300-level Operations and Supply Chain Management courses offered include: MGMT 371
Materials, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, MGMT 372 Project Management, and MGMT 373 Quality
Management.

Proposed teaching/delivery methods
A variety of teaching methods are employed, including lectures, guest lectures, tutorials, classes, group projects, case
studies, laboratory sessions, simulation games, practical exercises and plant visits.
Assessment procedures
Students are assessed by a combination of methods including written assignments, on-line tests and quizzes, formal
examinations and oral presentations.
Resources
Based on the current university workload model, there is adequate teaching resource to maintain this programme.
Plans for monitoring programme quality
Student feedback on the teaching quality and content of individual courses is regularly obtained and reviewed by the
Department in accordance with UC policy. Curriculum reviews are also undertaken by Operations and Supply Chain
Management teaching staff on an on-going basis. These changes are part of the academic quality improvement systems
being implemented in the Commerce Faculty with the aim of obtaining professional accreditation from the Association
for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International). Monitoring of programme quality will
therefore also be done via AACSB’s assurance of learning measurements.
