BCOM Lecturer gives presentation at charity launch event
BCOM lecturer Mark Hines gave a presentation last night at a charity launch party, to help
raise money for Demelza Hospice. The 4 Joshua three peaks challenge which begins on
29th March 2012, is made up of a team of six individuals who will undertake the challenge of
climbing the 3 Peaks - Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis. They will also cycle the 450
miles distance between all the peaks in just 72 hours to raise money for the children’s
Hospice, which has centres in South East London and Kent.
Mark was speaking alongside fellow adventurers Bonita Norris (the youngest British female
to reach the summit of Mount Everest), Belinda Kirk (who led an all-female crew to be the
first team to row around Britain) and Dave Cornthwaite (who has skateboarded over 4000
miles across Australia and paddle-boarded the length of the Mississippi).
As well as being an academic and doctoral researcher based at the British College of
Osteopathic Medicine, Mark is also a widely published author. He has published books on
his successful completions of some of the toughest ultra endurance races in the world, and
has released titles on health and nutrition and human evolution. Mark is regularly featured in
national health and fitness magazines. Mark is an experienced ultra-endurance runner and
adventurer, having competed in races in the most extreme environments on earth. This year
he plans to set new polar speed records in the Arctic, compete in various hundred-mile-plus
non-stop races, and finish the toughest altitude ultra-marathon in the world.
About BCOM:
The British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) www.bcom.ac.uk was founded in 1936 by
Stanley Lief, the eminent naturopathic osteopath. It is a statutory regulated and accredited training
facility, educational charity and centre of excellence in Osteopathic education, regulated by the
Osteopaths act of 1993 and accredited by the General Osteopathic Council.
BCOM clinics provide high quality, low-cost treatment based on holistic, or naturopathic, osteopathy.
This is a uniquely integrated approach, centring on the treatment and education of our patients not
only in terms of their particular problem, but also in the wider context of their lifestyle and its effect on
them.
Men, women and children of all ages come to BCOM Clinics for treatment of a wide variety of
conditions. Patients are assured of the highest standards of care, with all treatments carried out by
clinical students under strict supervision of qualified and experienced osteopaths.
Since its formation in 1936, the British College of Osteopathic Medicine has achieved an international
reputation for the professional excellence of its teaching and qualifications. It was the first educational
establishment to offer both a BOstMed degree and a BSc (Honours) Degree in Osteopathic Medicine,
in addition to being the first UK Osteopathic College to offer a BSc Hons Osteopathy conversion
course for graduates with the Diploma in Osteopathy. In 2008, BCOM launched its undergraduate
Masters in Osteopathy, providing public funding to eligible students.
