Over 70% energy saving achieved
Queen Mary University of London is one of the UK's leading
research-focused higher education institutions. With around
17,800 students, 4,000 staff and an annual turnover of
£300m, it is one of the biggest University of London
colleges.
The University has a Salix Finance fund for investment in
energy and carbon saving projects. Briar Associates assisted
in identifying Salix compliant projects, providing mechanical
& electrical design and project managing installation contractors. One project involved replacing the library lighting with
more energy efficient luminaires and improving lighting
controls. Mainly T8 fluorescent tube lights were replaced with
LED alternatives (by Apollo). In addition new PIR controls (by
Setsquare) were installed to provide presence based control
in the bookshelf aisles. Electrical installer was Peckfords.
Based on measured electricity consumption data
before and after installation, energy savings of over
70% have been achieved saving the University well
over £4,000 a month.
Kerry Horvath, Energy Reduction Manager at Queen Mary
University of London said “It’s great to achieve a significant
energy saving while maintaining a high quality study
environment. The new lighting has gone down well with our
library users”
