HIGH STANDARDS: BUILT AS A SHOW HOME FOR THE
THORNE GROUP, THE CONTEMPORARY DESIGN OF THE
HOUSE SHOWS THE EXACTING STANDARD EXPECTED
FROM ANY DWELLING BEARING THE COMPANY NAME.
WORDS: SORAYA NICHOLAS
PHOTOGRAPHY: SCOTT JOHNSON
Created as a show home for The Thorne Group, the ultramodern design of this Tauranga house sits comfortably
on the rectangular shaped site. Built to display the
exacting standard of workmanship demanded by
the well-established development company, The
Thorne Group seek to obtain excellence in design and
construction for every home bearing the company name.
Working carefully with an architect from Creative
Space Architectural Design Ltd, The Thorne Group
specifically wanted a house with a very contemporary
vibe, while still maintaining an understated level of
sophistication. Abundantly stylish and combining
luxury with practical living options, the house displays
unique design traits.
Although Creative Space Architectural Design Ltd is
used to working on many different homes, this house
required careful consideration in relation to the shape of
the site. Because it was necessary to incorporate ample
outdoor living and entertaining spaces, the available
building platform was analysed to ensure all of the design
ideals could be met.
Focused on a wide range of building projects, The
Thorne Group, based in the Bay of Plenty, is family
owned and operated, and has created homes and
subdivisions for many delighted customers over the
years. Offering completed homes, house and land
packages, either contemporary like this show home
or traditional in design, The Thorne Group also build
customised homes from a selection of plans available.
Chosen to execute the working drawings, The Thorne
Group turned to Gavin Morrow Builders to construct the
house. Working with Gavin for the past six years,
The Thorne Group has established a unique relationship
with the company.
Established in the building trade for twenty-five years,
Gavin Morrow Builders work closely with all their clients
from the initial design process right through to the
finishing touches. Recognising The Thorne Group as their
largest client, Gavin enjoys his close relationship with
the development company, and enjoys working on varied
projects with them regularly throughout each year.
Focused on achieving the highest possible standards
in plastering solutions, Exterior Plastering Services
were the logical choice for the job. Creating a sponge
finish over the brick component of the exterior,
the contemporary plaster surface complements the
weatherboard section of the home. Using a masonry
level compound, followed by two coats of float, the
finish is flat and sleek in appearance.
Ready to be painted once completely dry, Exterior
Plastering Services favour the Coating Technologies brand,
in this instance the colour is ‘Double Sequoia Dusk’.
Licensed to apply three different plastering systems,
Exterior Plastering Services only employ qualified plasterers,
or young persons working to complete their apprenticeship.
Continuing the modern theme of the design, Epic
Windows & Doors supplied all the aluminium joinery
for the house. Requiring horizontal lines befitting the
contemporary architectural brief, Epic Windows & Doors
created all the doors and windows in a ‘Silver Pearl’ finish.
Grey solar tint glass completed the effect.
To enhance the outdoor entertaining space, and
to provide seamlessness with the indoor living area,
large bi-fold doors were customised, creating a wide
expansive area when open.
Established for over twenty years and manufacturing
the First brand, comprising strong, box section
extrusions, Epic Windows & Doors supplies aluminium
joinery to many builders and developers in the region.
Referring to the amount of plaster the team tend to
be covered in rather than a drinking problem, Always
Plastered Ltd provided all the interior plastering
solutions for the home. Trained in all aspects of interior
plastering, and with experience in ceiling panels and
matching patterned cornices, the team at Always
Plastered Ltd work on new and character homes.
For the interior surfaces of this show home, the
finish required smooth, flat lines. Easily achieving the
desired surface, the final coat completed on the walls
was to a Level 4 (in some instances Level 5) paint finish.
Experienced at Gib-stopping new interiors, the Always
Plastered Ltd team completed the job ready for the
painting to commence.
In an effort to maintain customer service at all times,
Always Plastered Ltd will not finish until all surfaces are
completed to the highest level of workmanship in their
endless quest to perfection.
STYLISH FINISH: BEFITTING THE CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURAL
BRIEF, ALUMINIUM WINDOWS AND DOORS PROVIDE THE HOME
WITH SLEEK LINES, IN ‘SILVER PEARL’.
Invited to complete the interior decorating of the
house, Turner Painting Contractors were chosen to
paint every interior surface. Utilising Wattyl products,
the home displays warm whites and other soft neutral
tones, creating a welcome mood throughout. Colours
are unobtrusive and used in a flat finish — the most
common finish chosen for interior walls.
To provide continuity between the different rooms,
there are no bold colour choices, which suit the nature
of the home. Designed to appeal to the majority of
potential homeowners viewing the house, the colour
scheme and overall finishes display the best in
contemporary shades and choices, allowing the focus
to be on the design and layout of the interior.
Every entertainers dream, the galley-style
kitchen in this luxurious show home was created
by Modern Kitchens Ltd. Finished with a seamless,
solid white bench-top, and combined with lacquer and
Melteca surfaces, the fluid white kitchen is uncluttered
and sophisticated.
The kitchen is designed with functionality in mind
allowing easy movement between each appliance and
drawer unit. A cleverly concealed bench-top cupboard
is ideal for appliances, and glowing florescent lights
give the space a ‘floating’ effect. The island unit is
cantilevered to enhance the design.
Modern Kitchens Ltd transforms kitchen ideas
into virtual realities and offer complete packages
from design through to installation.
Working closely with The Thorne Group to achieve
their lighting requirements, DJS Electrical Ltd are a
progressive company working steadily in the area.
Creating detailed lighting plans for every new house
they work on, from small dwellings to sizeable homes,
DJS Electrical Ltd make sure the lighting is correct
for each individual room.
Marking out the required lighting on the floor to
show where on the ceiling each fitting needs to placing,
DJS Electrical Ltd take the time to consider plans and
recommend the best options available. From standard
wiring and lights to home automation, C-Bus and
security systems, the busy company have built a solid
reputation in their five years of business.
RESTFUL WELCOME: WARM WHITES AND QUIET NEUTRAL TONES
ALLOW FOR A WELCOME, RESTFUL CONTINUITY THROUGHOUT
THE INTERIOR. TO ACHIEVE THE SMOOTH, QUALITY FINISH THE
INTERIOR WALLS WERE PLASTERED TO A LEVEL 4 PAINT FINISH.
EPICUREAN DELIGHT: THE GALLEY STYLE KITCHEN IS AN
ENTERTAINER’S DREAM AND THE BRIGHT WHITE COLOUR SCHEME
COMPLEMENTS THE CONTEMPORARY NATURE OF THE HOME.
Chosen to supply all of the plumbing and gas fitting
necessities to the house, Bell Plumbing Ltd used only
the highest quality materials to complete the requisite
plumbing services. The company provides full plumbing
package and maintenance services for new and existing
homes. Established since 1939, Bell Plumbing Ltd is
recognised for the company’s dedication to the profession.
Completing all of the plumbing amenities for the
show home Bell Plumbing Ltd ensured this aspect of the
building phase ran smoothly. Although there was nothing
particularly unique about the drain and plumbing plan,
the specialist company provided well-considered advice to
The Thorne Group throughout the project.
Chosen to supply high-end porcelain tiles imported
from Brazil, the Tile Warehouse Tauranga helped to
achieve the modern appearance of the bathrooms. Using
texture to create visually interesting surfaces rather than
a colour contrast, the selected tiles embody understated
design. The size of the tiles provides a continuous effect,
allowing the space to appear large and unhindered by
overbearing patterns or shapes. The same effect was also
achieved in the kitchen.
Selected in a 450x450 size, the exclusive tiles are
hardwearing by nature, and can be paired with matching
pencil linea mosaics to achieve a modern edge.
Providing full design consultations, as well as free
quotes, the Tile Warehouse Tauranga creates unique
styles to match individual requirements.
