1. What are waves?
Waves are disturbances in an object that vibrate.
2. What are electromagnetic waves?
“Electromagnetic waves are formed when an electric field. Magnetic and electric fields of an electromagnetic
wave are perpendicular to each other and to the direction of the wave”
3. What is a wavelength?
Wavelength is the distance between one wave crest to the next.
4. How much do the waves in the EM spectrum vary in size?
Waves in the electromagnetic spectrum vary in size from very long radio waves the size of buildings, to very
short gamma-rays smaller than the size of the nucleus of an atom.
5. Radio waves have the _longest_ wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum.
6. How do we "see" using Radio Waves?
We see radio waves when we watch T.V. and when we listen to the radio
7. What do Radio Waves show us?
The ignition of the spark plugs in gasoline-powered cars can interfere with radio observations

We can see microwaves by cooking food.
9. What do Microwaves show us?
Microwaves show us that our food is able to be eaten.
10. How can we "see" using the Infrared?
Infrared waves can be seen
11. What does the Infrared show us?
Infrared beams show us land in the visible range of clouds, and it is used for thermal images.
12. How does false-color infrared imaging work?
False- color infrared frequently uses a color scheme to show the temperature of objects.
13. How do we "see" using Visible Light?
“Cones in our eyes are receivers for these tiny visible light waves. The Sun is a natural source for visible light
waves and our eyes see the reflection of this sunlight off the objects around us.”
14. Ultraviolet (UV) light has __shorter__ wavelengths than visible light.
15. What does Ultraviolet light show us?
Ultraviolet light shows us the color change in objects.
16. How do we "see" using X-ray light?
We see X-ray light by looking at a X-ray from a hospital, or dentist

“Gamma rays are produced by radioactive atoms and in nuclear explosions.”

“Gamma rays show us the hearts of solar flares, supernovae, neutron stars, black holes, and active
galaxies.”
