Week One: Introduction, Presuppositions
God does not know the future and can change His
mind.
 And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the
earth, and it grieved him to his heart. (Gen 6:6)
We have power in our words.
 Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be
taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in
his heart, but believes that what he says will come to
pass, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you,
whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received
it, and it will be yours. (Mark 11:23-24)
“The bible says no man can take your joy. That means no
person can make you live with a negative attitude. No
circumstance, no adversity can force you to live in
despair.” (Your Best Life Now, Joel Osteen)
 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again,
and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy
from you. (John 16:22)

Hermeneuo - Greek means to “Interpret”
It is the study of sound Bible Interpretation.
 It is a Principle.
 It is a Science and an Art
"Hermeneutics, therefore, is both a science and an art.
As a science, it enunciates principles, investigates the
laws of thought and language, and classifies its facts and
results. As an art, it teaches what application these
principles should have, and establishes their soundness
by showing their practical value in the elucidation of the
more difficult scriptures.”

Biblical Hermeneutics, 2d ed, Grand
Rapids: Zondervan Publishing House.
Our understanding of God, Man, Salvation…all of theology is
dependent on a correct interpretation.
So we can be equipped.
 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for
teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in
righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped
for every good work. (2 Tim. 3:16-17)
So we are not ashamed.
 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman
who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the
word of truth. (NAS- 2 Tim 2:15)
Be “Bereans” against false teachings.
 Baptism for the dead? (I Cor 15:29)
 Jesus inferior, begotten by the Father? (Col 1:15)
 Handle poisonous snakes? (Mk 16.18)
Ultimately to help us walk with God, to love Him with all our heart,
soul, strength and mind, to love others and to make godly decision
in life.
Bible as the Word of God
 It is inspired or “God breathed” (2 Tim 3:16).

 Over personal experience
 Over reason
 Over tradition or dogma

 I Cor 2:14

The Clarity of Scripture (Perspicuity)
The clarity of Scripture means that the Bible is written in
such a way that its teachings are able to be understood by
all who will read it seeking God’s help and being willing to
follow it.
