Separating a Mixture
Dr. Slotsky Honors Chemistry I
Goals:
Separate a mixture of salt and sand which has been given to you by your instructor and
determine the percentage of salt in the mixture by weight.
Note: please LIMIT the amount of water you use. Remember that it can take a very
long time to evaporate a solution, and this time will increase the more volume you have. You
may not have time to evaporate a liter of water during a single period! Use the minimum
volume necessary.
Notes: (write down a record of what you did during this lab period)
Mixture tare mass (empty beaker) ___________ grams
Mixture in beaker _________________________grams
Net mass of mixture _______________________grams
Salt tare mass (empty beaker) ______________grams
Salt in beaker____________________________grams
Net mass of salt __________________________grams
Percentage of salt ( mass of salt times 100 divided by mass of mixture) ____%
Writeup (attach a separate sheet if necessary.):
Please write up what happened in this experiment. Include:
1)
Did you separate the salt from the sand? What steps did you follow?
2)
Did you perform any chemical changes, or only physical changes, during this lab? Why?
Cite textbook as necessary to answer.
