Ways to Separate
Mixtures
Which Method?
• There are several ways to separate
mixtures.
• The physical properties of the mixture
will determine which separation
method is the best one to use.
Sifting
• Sifting involves using a sieve or a sifter as a
way to separate solids of varying sizes.
• Examples include: rocks, gravel, and sand.
• Think of another example of a mixture that
can be separated by sifting.
Magnetic Attraction
• Magnets are used to separate magnetic materials such
as iron, steel, nickel or cobalt from non-magnetic
materials in a mixture.
• Examples include: separating iron filings from sand.
• Think of another example of a mixture that can be
separated by using a magnet.
Filtration
• Filtration removes solids from liquids by using a
filter.
• Example: a mixture of sand and water
• Think of another example of a mixture that can
be separated by using a filter.
Evaporation
• Evaporation involves heating a solution until the
liquids turn to gases and leave the solids behind.
• Example: boiling a solution of water and salt until
all that is left are the salt crystals.
Which Method?
• You have been given a mixture of sand, salt, and
water. Which method or methods will you use to
separate this mixture? Why?
