LESSON OBJECTIVES
• To review how energy cycles between chloroplasts and mitochondria
• To review the constituents and functions of chloroplasts and mitochondria
• To review the principles of photosynthesis, and anaerobic and aerobic respiration
• To review all previous concepts and demonstrate understanding by answering questions
FOCUS AND MOTIVATE STUDENTS – WARM-UP ACTIVITY
1) Homework Check – Collect all homework assignments from last night. Hand back all graded assignments and
notes and have students put them in the appropriate section of their binder.
2) Agenda – Have students copy the agenda you have posted.
3) Review – Review briefly what you discussed yesterday. Have the students tell you the main points of
yesterday’s lesson. Chose one student to write the main points on the board as the students discuss them.
ACTIVITIES – INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP
1.
Lecture – Again show images of C3, C4 and CAM plants. An image of C4 plant photosynthesis can be found on
the Biology web site: http://gened.emc.maricopa.edu/Bio/BIO181/BIOBK/BioBookTOC.html While you are
showing the images, use the Teacher’s Notes Lesson 17 to continue the lecture on photosynthesis. Choose a new
student to take notes on the overhead today. Make sure to put their name in the grade book.
2.
Group Questions – Hand out Making and Releasing Energy Questions. Have students work in their groups to
answer the questions. Ask them to assign group roles (see Group Roles below). The students must determine how
to answer these questions, including where they found their information. In some cases, they should be able to
deduce the answer, but they must find evidence somewhere. They should be able to figure out that the majority of
the information is in their notes or their textbook or on the Biology Internet site. Tell them they will have the rest of
the period to work on the questions. They are due at the end of class.
3.
Homework Review – At the end of the period, collect their notes and the questions. Remind them of their
homework for the evening. Tell them to go directly to the computer lab tomorrow.

HOMEWORK
1) Read Starr’s Biology Concepts and Applications chapter 6, pp. 102-106. If you are using another textbook have
the students read about the following topics: fixing carbon in C3, C4 and CAM plants. Make a list of the key
concepts and ideas.
2) Study vocabulary to date.
GROUP ROLES
Recorder – The Recorder will record all results during the laboratory. All group members are recorders.
Facilitator – The Facilitator will keep group members focused on the activity.
Illustrator – The Illustrator will draw a scheme or illustration of the data discussed.
Manager – The Manager is responsible for keeping track of the time and making sure that all questions are answered
by the end of the period.
