Abstract-Air pollution introduces the toxic substances in the atmosphere which cause
detrimental effects to human health and plant species. It is known fact that 60% of air
pollution in small cities is caused by automobiles exhaust and heavy vehicles on highway.
The effect of these pollutants is observed on perennial plants which are considers for
investigation of effect of auto exhaust pollutants on highway side flora and fauna. The aim of
present study to investigate the impact of accumulation of particulate matter (SPM and
RSPM), Gaseous pollutant (SOx, NOx) on photosynthetic pigments (Chlorophyll a
Chlorophyll b and carotenoids of seven common highway side plant species (Acacia
veirbicky, Neolmarckia kadamba, Dulbergia sisso, Azadiractica indica, Magnifera indica,
Ficus virens, Ficus reliagosa) growing at national highway (NH-28) between Faizabad to
Ayodhya. Six samplings were performed in a period of January to June months. Further,
increased concentration of particulate matter (SPM 650±24 and RSPM 412.23±20 µg/m3) and
gaseous pollutant (SOx 16.52±3.2 and NOx 35.25±4.1 µg/m3) were measured with
respiratory dust sampler. which was several fold greater than the normal standard and
significant reduction in chlorophyll content and change in pH were recorded at the highway
site plants, compared to control site (Rural area) There was a value of pollutant in controlled
area (SPM 97.64±7.4 and RSPM 80.23±6 µg/m3 and SOx 9.85±1.5 and NOx 19.25±2.2
µg/m3). Change in the concentration of different photosynthetic pigments (Chlorophyll 'a'
60%, Chlorophyll 'b' 50% and carotenoids 48%). The data were analyzer using one-way
ANOVA and a significant change was observed in the studied parameter. Our studies clearly
indicate that the vehicular pollution reduces the concentration of photosynthetic pigments in
the trees exposed to highway side pollution.
