Position Summary
Sheriff’s Officers contribute to the provision of a high level of client services to all court users and
to the overall security of Courts Administration Authority facilities, administrative personnel,
members of the judiciary and other court users
The role is within the Sheriff’s Division.
Sheriff’s Officers are responsible to a designated Senior Sheriff’s Officer and where appropriate,
will take direction on day to day issues from Registrars of regional Magistrates courts.
The Sheriff’s Officer maintains working relationships with:



Members of the Judiciary
Court users
CAA administrative personnel.
Key Responsibilities
The Sheriff’s Officer will achieve the following objectives and key outcomes by:





Contributing to an effective support service to all court users by performing the duties of the
in-court support, prisoner security and court security roles.
Ensuring personal adherence to all Sheriff’s Officer operational procedures and
requirements of the Sheriff’s Act, 1978.
Contributing to the maintenance and operation of emergency safety standards for all court
users.
Providing a high level of customer service to all court users.
Complying with the requirement of the Occupational Health, Safety & Welfare Act 1986,
and the Occupational Health, Safety & Welfare Regulations, 2010) in particular the
requirements of Section 21 of the Act – “Duties of Employees”.

Professional, Technical and Personal Capabilities
To successfully perform in this role the Sheriff’s Officer must have the following
skills/abilities/aptitudes:









High level of customer service skills and the ability to respond to enquiries in a courteous
and helpful manner under a variety of conditions.
Highly developed inter-personal skills which foster the co-operation and support of others at
all levels.
Ability to deal with people from a diverse range of backgrounds and show cultural
understanding.
Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and maintain constructive relationships.
Ability to recognise and handle conflict situations.
Ability to accurately record information in legible handwriting and maintain confidentiality at
all times.
Ability to physically and psychologically perform all duties of the position whilst exercising
authority as a security officer under the Sheriffs Act. This includes working in a prisoner cell
environment and restraining people by learned minimum force restraint techniques.
Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
Completion of internal Sheriff’s Officer training course.
DESIRABLE CAPABILITIES
While not essential, it will be considered favourable if the Sheriff’s Officer has some or all of the
following skills/abilities/knowledge/experience/qualifications.




Keyboard skills and computer literacy.
Current Driver’s Licence.
Knowledge of the justice system.
Hold a basic first aid certificate.

Working Environment
As an employee of the Courts Administration Authority you will be required to:



Actively participate in the Court Administration Authority’s Performance Management
program.
Comply with, and contribute to, meeting workplace legislative and policy requirements,
including occupational health, safety and welfare and records management.
Maintain the ethical and behavioural standards outlined in the Code of Ethics for South
Australian Public Sector Employees
Flexible working arrangements may be available depending on business needs.
The Courts Administration Authority is a smoke free workplace.
Special Conditions
The following special conditions apply to this position:
 Engagement is under the Courts Administration Authority Act 1993. Terms and conditions of
employment are governed by the Public Sector Act, 2009.
 Salary at the ninth step of the OPS1 salary range whilst the officer undertakes all training and
until deemed competent in the roles of prisoner security, in-court support and court security
before progressing to the first step of the OPS2 salary range once deemed multi-skilled and
performing all three roles. Initial appointment is a six month temporary contract with a view to
renewal for a further six months prior to an offer of on-going employment dependant upon a
satisfactory assessment of work performance.
 Sheriff’s Officers hold an appointment as a security officer pursuant to the Sheriff’s Act.
 Will be required to wear regulation issue uniform.
 Will be required to authorise the Courts Administration Authority to conduct a confidential
criminal history check.
 Maybe directed to work in any city/metropolitan/regional location on a temporary or ongoing
basis.
You may be required to:

Undertake intra or inter state travel which may necessitate overnight absences,

Work outside of the normal hours of work.

Be assigned duties to another role at the same remuneration level if required by the State
