GLOSSARY Atom: something so small that you need a microscope to see it and is everything ariund us. Electrons: part of an atom which spins around the protons and neutrons Protons: the positive side of an atom which is in the middle with neutrons Neutrons: the negative part in the middle of an atom Power plant: a place outside of the city with lots of generators Generater: a device which we use to transport Circuit: A connection between a energy source and power source Parrellel circuit: when two pathways connect to the same power source Series circuit: when there is one pathway with many energy sources but one power source Current electricty: a flow of atoms in a circuit G9 Ciputra | Lac Long Quan Road, Tay Ho District Hanoi, Vietnam http://www.unishanoi.org/ Electricity What is Electricity? BE AMAZED BY HOW IT WORKS My opinion is, electricity is a source of energy that we use in everyday life such as turning on light bulb. If you want something that you need to plug in or has an on and off switch to work it needs electricity. It makes light, sound, heat and or motion. Electricity is made up of atoms. An atom is made up of electrons and protons and neutrons. The electrons move around the protons and neutrons, which are in the middle. There is a certain amount of protons and neutrons in each atom. Say there were six, half the light switch on to light a of that would be positive and the other half negative. Therefore, for electricity to work you need a circuit and a power source for the electricity to connect to a power source that is usually a power plant or many generators that connect to different places. A circuit is needed for electricity to move. A circuit is a connection between, say, a light bulb and a battery that is the light bulb’s power source. You use wires to connect the light bulb to the battery that makes the light bulb work. However, there is a trick to it. There is a negative (-) and positive (+) to the battery if you have not noticed. There is also one on the light bulb. Link HOW DOES ELECTRICTY WORK? For electricity to work you need a circuit as I said before in ‘What is Electricity?’ what is a circuit? A circuit iqs a connection between a power source and, say, a light bulb. There are two different types of circuits. One of them is a parallel circuit. A parallel circuit is when you have two pathways that connect to the same power source. A pathway is like a circuit but may not connect to the power source right away. Another type of circuit is a series circuit. It sounds like it is supposed to have many pathways but it only has one but still with a couple light bulbs. Here is a picture of a parallel and series circuit: HOW DOES ELECTRICITY CONTECT TO MAGNETISM? WHAT DIFFERENT FORMS OF ELECTRICTY ARE THERE? There are many different forms of electricity. Such as static electricity or current electricity. CURRENT ELECTRICTY: Current electricity is when there is a flow of atoms in a circuit. There are types of current electricity. DC or direct current and AC alternating current. DC is when you get power from batteries, solar panels and generators. It only goes in one direction. However, an AC current is when you get power from the walls of your house. Like an outlet. For an AC current the flow of electrons switches every mill-second. Did you know? That for an AC current a light flickers every time the flow of electrons switches. You can only see it in slow motion. Link LINK STATIC ELECTRICITY: Static electricity is when electrons transfer from one atom to another. You need an electrical charge for it to work. Like rubbing a balloon on your head. The electrons transfer from your hair to your balloon. Now the balloon has a negative charge from the electrons and your hair has a positive charge from the other electrons left on your hair. The negative electrons attract the positive electrons so your hair stands up when the balloon is a tiny bit away. EXPERIMENT : Blow up a balloon and tie it. Then rub it against your hair. See, afterwards, in the mirror if your hair follows the balloon. If it does then you have just made an electrical charge! Good job! In my opinion, electricity connects to magnetism by the positive and negative from a battery and a north and south from a magnet. In a circuit positive and negative are on a battery while north and south are on a magnet. They connected because if you where to put two north sides from two magnets they repel. Also when you put two wires in the positive side of a battery and attach the other ends of the wires to a light, will the light work? No, it won’t because they are like magnets. They don’t repel but they can’t make the light work like you can’t get two north sides of two magnets to stick to each other. I found out that many conductors to complete a circuit are attracted to magnets. So they turn out to be either north or south. Whichever way they get attracted to they turn the opposite such as a rock got attracted to the south side of a magnet then the rock would be north. EXPERIMENT: Get two donut magnets and a compass in good shape. Hang one magnet on string and tape the string on the edge of a surface that doesn’t have anything magnetic around it then try to find which side is north and which side is south. To help you, use the compass.. WHAT WOULD DAILY LIFE BE LIKE WITHOUT ELECTRICTY AND MAGNETISM? Without electricity in certain weather would sometimes mean not many will survive. That is, in my opinion. On the CBC website we were asked to look at some of the videos from the ice storm of 1961 in Montréal. After we had to record what life would be like without electricity and what uses of electricity you needed to survive. During an ice storm many trees fall on power lines which means that certain houses nearby may not get electricity. It also takes a lot of time and people to get the electricity restored in only a couple days. It is much harder to restore it because many of the tools that are needed use electricity such as light for the workers to see. Meanwhile, people must get to better shelters that aren’t their homes. To get to shelters they need they need vehicles but their own vehicles are under a lot of snow. So they use emergency vehicles that are somewhat bigger.
