Day 3 – Thursday 19th April 2012 Session 8 ABSTRACT Matthias Groppe, Head of Training, Pilot Training Network GmbH Influencing Student Progress Monitoring in a Distributed Training Environment Via the Training Record Design The objective for a new e-Design of the Training Records required for Monitoring Students’ Training Progress was to better understand the cognitive mechanisms of the flight instructors when recording student progress at various distributed locations. If flight training is offered in a Distributed Learning Environment, a standardized way of monitoring the learning progress is necessary that allows maintaining a shared situational awareness of the students’ progress at different locations at the same time. In such a way, not only a synchronous provision of all training records that require attention has to be assured, but also a documentation of training is required that provides the maximum standardization among the instructors’ cognitive functions of the students’ performance. During a study, a new design combining of electronic and traditional training records was proposed that allows monitoring the training progress including the students’ performance and the adherence to the syllabus at the first glance. A colour-coded grading system was developed that highlights areas with progress not on track or performance below required completion standard. Within the agreed grading policies, a minimum performance level was defined that initiates cooperative sharing of such information with the other training locations. Application of such training records for progress monitoring revealed that the transparency gained from such a way of continuous training progress awareness resulted in an improved timeliness and quality of students’ performance assessment with reduced duration and cost of training for students with performance below required completion standard.
