Wokingham Primary ICT Conference “Next Generation Learning” Reading University Tuesday 26th March 2013 Agenda for the day Registration 12:45 – 1:00 12:45: Coffee and refreshments are available in the school common room. G32 Keynote: 13:15 - 13:45 “Rethinking ICT – Introducing Computing to the Curriculum” SCHOOL Chris Leach, Head of ICT from the Winchester School. COMMON Chris Leach is the Head of ICT at Winchester House School where he teaches ICT to all the ROOM G32 children from Nursery up to Year 8. Chris’ innovative use of ICT, such as his Gunpowder, Tweeting and Plot project, have led to him being shortlisted for a Learning Without Frontiers, Primary Innovator award and a TES ICT Visionary award in the past year. He is the founder of the Rethinking ICT Conference and is currently a member of the Primary ICT National Curriculum Expert Group advising the Teaching Agency on how trainee teachers can be supported through the changes in the ICT curriculum. Please Move to Workshops promptly Workshops Session 1 - 14:00 - 15:00 1a: Creative use of iPads in the classroom@KS2 – Jon Audain, Senior Lecturer in Primary ICT and Music, Apple Distinguished Educator. The use of mobile technology at Key Stage 2 can support children's learning, topic work and research skills in new, exciting and different ways. Find out in this workshop how the iPad and apps can make learning come alive. Explore a range of curriculum apps and discover why you shouldn't throw the old out for the new and reinvent the wheel again. 1b: Rethinking ICT @KS1 – Bringing computing to life - exploring practical ways to introduce difficult concepts to the primary class room - how does a computer work? What happens when I search the internet? Chris will also be sharing some of his favourite web 2.0 tools and how he has used them with his classes. 1c: Algorithms are fun! An introduction to the programming language of Scratch. A practical hands on session using free software from MIT Alison Rolls and Dr James Anderson, Lecturer, Reading University (Cybernetics Research Group). ELECTRONICS TEACHING LAB – G56 capacity 30 – 50 SCHOOL COMMON ROOM G32 capacity 30 – 50 PC LAB G45 capacity 20 - 25 In the new draft National Curriculum, the subject ICT has evolved into Computing. Mentioning such things as algorithms, selections and variables it may appear daunting to the classroom teacher. This practical session aims to demonstrate some basic principles through the freely available programming language of Scratch. There will be an opportunity to try out ideas and activities based on these concepts, and receive resources to help you create animations, games and quizzes that will provide endless fun in your Computing lessons. Refreshments Available in the School common room G32 15:00 – 15:25 Workshops Session 2- 15:30 – 16:30 2a: Computer science is for Early Years too! – start them young, looking at how programming and control can be an exciting part of the Early Years and KS1 curriculum – Denise Hughes, AST Teaching and Learning and Wokingham ICT Team and Kate from TTS Wokingham Primary ICT Conference - Next Generation Learning ELECTRONICS TEACHING LAB – G56 capacity 30 – 50 2b: Extending programming in Primary schools - A new approach to teaching Able, Gifted and Talented ICT pupils through Code Club and Digital Leaders - Amy Tisi and pupils from Beechwood Primary and Alison Rolls, ICT Leading Teacher, The Colleton Primary. Organised across the country, Code Club is a highly motivating and structured way to engage children with coding, using Scratch software and other programming languages with the support of an ICT professional volunteer. Using Digital Leaders to run similar clubs can also be an effective way to spread the load, (and the fun!) while getting children to create games and animations using the coding language of Scratch. Find out how a club run by Digital Leaders and Beechwood Primary Code Club work and what the benefits could be for you and the children. Pupils from Beechwood Primary will share their experiences of their Code Club and demonstrate some of their new skills. 2c: An introduction to Games Making with Microsoft Kodu (free) – and 2DIY - Emma Scrine ICT subject Leader Southlake Primary School and pupils. During the workshop, we will look at the main features of 2 DIY and the free resource Microsoft Kodu and discuss how our school has integrated these into the curriculum. A hands on workshop led by our pupils will show you how to use Kodu to create a simple world and how objects can be programmed to interact with each other.
