Visual Scaffolding
Providing Language Support Through Visuals
Images
Visual Scaffolding
DEFINITION:
An approach in which the language used in
instruction is made more understandable by the
display of drawings or photographs that allow
students to hear English words and connect
them to the visual images being displayed.
Visual Scaffolding
EXAMPLES
Visual Scaffolding
IMPLEMENTATION STEPS:
2. Collect Visuals
3. Reproduce and Organize Visuals
4. Engage the Students
5. Build the File
Visual Scaffolding
For an Oceanography lesson, I chose the Book
Commotion in the Ocean by Giles Andreae &
David Wojtowycz for my example…
Visual Scaffolding
Identify Vocabulary
Visual Scaffolding
Before reading the story, I would break the class
into groups.
I have already premade group story boards from
pictures of our story, Commotion in the Ocean.
Each group would get a story board with the
reproduced characters from the story.
As I read the story, I would emphasize the
vocabulary words and ask the group to also hold up
the replica picture to show that they are identifying
the picture with the vocabulary word.
Visual Scaffolding
The story boards would be engaging the children
and we could keep the felt story boards to use
on their own for constructive free play, which
would build the file for them!
Collecting and Processing Words
Making Vocabulary Your Own
Collecting and Processing Words
Definition:
Collecting words is a strategy for helping children
develop better speaking and writing vocabularies. It
also serves to support their understanding of words
that have the same or similar meanings. By
"collecting" words, students are constantly building
a collection of words and word meanings that will
serve to increase their understanding of oral
language and improve and strengthen their spoken
vocabulary and eventually their writing skills.

Collecting and Processing Words
I chose to use the same book, Commotion in the
Ocean by Giles Andreae & David Wojtowycz.
Collecting and Processing Words
In reading the story, Commotion in the Ocean, I
would set up a word chart, to chart words the
students would get stuck on.

We, as teachers, can more easily assess the oral and
written usage of these and other words the children
are hearing and learning. (See the example below)

Collecting and Processing Words
Create a collection of words, sentences, and
synonyms by giving the children a writing
journal. This journal can contain sentences
and/or drawings to show that they understand
the words they are hearing and learning.
