Networks
Recommend a networked information system for a specific use and explain possible security
threats to this networked information system.
iD8 tech
iD8 tech is a small business currently located in the western suburbs of Melbourne. The business offers
software development in all areas including web, in-house business and gaming for a multitude of
clients. Tom is the owner-operator of the business. Tom has just landed a huge deal with Google. They
have invested $2 billion into iD8 tech and want to expand its educational software development section.
Currently Tom works from home and has two other people that work for him. They complete tasks
remotely using their own personal computers. Work is then emailed or sent on a DVD in the post to
Tom to compile jobs together. Tom is going to use the money from Google to hire 10 new design and
development staff members plus 1 network professional to support the new information system.
iD8 tech is looking at a new warehouse office space close to the city. The space is currently empty and
will need to be setup with a reception area, an office area for each staff member, an office for Tom and
a presentation area. It must include a computer network that satisfies the following requirements:

A workstation for Tom in his office area

A workstation for the reception area

A workstation and office space for each of the new 10 staff members

A network that will store all client work that the staff are working on

A network that will store all accounting details for the business and also client information such
as payments and invoices and addresses and contacts

A suitable printing facility for all office staff including reception and Tom

Internet access and email

A test environment or server for in-house testing and development

A relaxation corner or games section to the office where staff can unplug and relax but work at
the same time if they like

A dedicated coding chamber where it’s completely silent and staff can knuckle down and focus
on a specific task away from any distractions


Tasks
1. Summarise the current iD8 tech setup and list the new information needs of
the expanded business.
2. Explain how the new information system will improve efficiency over the old
setup.
3. Use a table and list the advantages and disadvantages of the network, paying
particular attention to the cost, speed and reliability of the network.
4. Draw a network diagram of the system you would recommend for iD8 tech in
the new warehouse office space. (You’re not required to use any specific
software to do this, as long as you provide a diagram that clearly shows your
network layout design).
5. List the equipment that would be needed to fulfill your network layout and
design.
6. Identify the potential threats to the security of the information stored and
communicated via the iD8 tech network.
7. Identify the role and responsibilities of the new network professional that will
support and help develop the new information system.
