Course Description: Exploring Space: The High Frontier is a course that includes the latest information available in space science and space exploration. The course begins with the study of the space environment from the earliest days of interest in astronomy into modern history. It investigates the importance of entering space and discusses manned and unmanned space flights, focusing on concepts surrounding spaceflight, space vehicles, launch systems, and space missions. Unit 1: The Space Environment Chapter 1: The History of Astronomy Lesson 1: Prehistoric and Classical Astronomy Lesson 2: Astronomy and the Renaissance Chapter 2: Earth and Moon Lesson 1: Earth, Inside and Out Lesson 2: The Moon: Earth’s Fellow Traveler Chapter 3: The Sun and the Solar System Lesson 1: The Sun and Its Domain Lesson 2: The Terrestrial Planets Lesson 3: The Outer Planets Lesson 4: Dwarf Planets, Comets, Asteroids, Kuiper Belt Objects Chapter 4: Deep Space Lesson 1: The Milky Way Galaxy Lesson 2: What Lies Beyond Unit 2: Exploring Space Chapter 5: Exploring, Living, and Working in Space Lesson 1: Why Explore Space? Lesson 2: Assembling a Space Mission Lesson 3: The Hazards of Spacecraft Lesson 4: Making Space People-Friendly Course Objectives: 1. Know the history of astronomy and specific Earth, Moon, solar system characteristics 2. Comprehend the big picture of space exploration, including the history of spaceflight and associated organizations 3. Comprehend the importance of entering space, characteristics of spaceflight 4. Comprehend the key concepts for getting from the Earth’s surface into orbit, to other planets and back 5. Comprehend how spacecraft, rockets, and launch vehicles are designed and built 6. Comprehend the latest advances in space technology Course Description - LE: Stresses communication skills and cadet corps activities. Much information is provided on effective communication, understanding groups and teams, as well as, preparing for leadership. We provide practical nutritional guidance balanced with a focus on physical fitness activities such as push-ups, crunches, pull-ups, lunges, running, other cardio exercises, and various fitness activities. The objective is to promote an overall healthy lifestyle. Each Friday is devoted to physical fitness; therefore, appropriate clothing should be brought for exercise on that day. The cadet handbook covers nearly everything a cadet should know regarding military customs, courtesies, wear of the Air Force JROTC uniform, daily classroom routine, and decorum. The objective in covering cadet handbook material in class is for each cadet to be confident in demonstrating excellence in uniform wear, customs, courtesies, and to apply productive citizenship behavior in and out of the classroom. Uniform Day Every Wednesday is uniform day. Cadets unexpectedly missing uniform day *must* make it up on Thursday. Each cadet must wear an Air Force JROTC approved uniform combination on uniform day. Noncompliance is not only devastating to the cadet’s grade but is also cause for disenrollment. Details on wearing the uniform may be found in the TX-946 Cadet Handbook. Uniform grading standards are listed below under, “Grading Procedure.” Grading Criteria (per AISD): 100 – 90 A 89 – 80 B 79 – 75 C 74 – 70 D Below 70 F Grading Procedure: Uniform Wear: All day proper wear: 100 pts max Make-up option (Thursday): 75 pts max Classroom: Exams Quiz/Writing Cadet Jobs: Exec Staff Staff/Involvement 100 pts 50 pts 100 pts/6-wk 50 pts/6-wk ***In order to travel with the cadet group for curriculum in action activities and competitions, cadets must be earning no less than a 70% in each class*** First day of school: Monday, 22 Aug Last day of 1st semester: Friday, 23 Dec (84.5 instructional days) First day of 2nd semester: Monday, 9 Jan Last day of class: Friday, 26 May (91.5 instructional days) 22 Aug m (AS) Introduction - Introduce instructors - Introduce cadet leadership – Chain of Command - Explain purpose of AFJROTC - Classroom decorum - General expectations - Cadet Activities/Grades 23 Aug t (AS) Cadet Handbook - Introduce Current Events Procedures - TX-946 designation - TX-946 syllabus - TX-946 website - Dress and Appearance/Uniform Day 24 Aug w (AS) Cadet Handbook UNIFORM DAY - Dress and Appearance/Uniform Day - Saluting - Static drill 25 Aug th (AS) Cadet Handbook - Rank – Cadet/Active Duty - Static drill, basic marching 26 Aug f (PT) - Introduction to Physical Fitness 29 Aug m (AS) - Current Events - Visitors and VIPs in the portable - Pledge of Allegiance 30 Aug t (AS) - Current Events - National Anthem 31 Aug w (LE) UNIFORM DAY - Military Drill 1 Sep th (LE) - Military Drill 2 Sep f (PT) - Fitness 5 Sep m (AS) - Labor Day 6 Sep t (AS) - Review (rank, protocol) - Introduction to the US government 7 Sep w (LE) UNIFORM DAY - Military Drill 8 Sep th (LE) - Military Drill 9 Sep f (PT) - Fitness 12 Sep m (AS) - Current Events - US Government (major figures) 13 Sep t (AS) - Current Events - US Government (major figures) - Military Chain of Command 14 Sep w (LE) UNIFORM DAY - Communication, Awareness, Leadership 15 Sep th (LE) - Communication, Awareness, Leadership 16 Sep f (PT) - Fitness 26 Sep m (AS) - Current Events - Military Chain of Command - Air Force Chain of Command 27 Sep t (AS) - Current Events - Air Force Chain of Command 28 Sep w (LE) UNIFORM DAY - Communication, Awareness, Leadership 29 Sep th (LE) - Communication Awareness, Leadership 30 Sep f (PT) - Fitness 3 Oct m (AS) - Current Events - Review (US Government, military, Air Force chain of command) 4 Oct t (AS) - Test (open note) US Government, military, Air Force chain of command 5 Oct w (LE) UNIFORM DAY - Communication, Awareness, Leadership 6 Oct th (LE) - Communication, Awareness, Leadership 7 Oct f (PT) - Fitness 10 Oct m (AS) - Columbus Day 11 Oct t (AS) - Current Events - Exploring Space -- Advantages of space -- Unique characteristics of space 12 Oct w (LE) UNIFORM DAY - Communication, Awareness, and Leadership 13 Oct th (LE) - Communication, Awareness, Leadership 14 Oct f (PT) - Fitness 17 Oct m (AS) - Current Events - Exploring Space -- Characteristics/advantages/disadvantages of space -- Activity – Should we explore space?
